go By K.C. Brintnall RUNNING SPRINGS, CAL., July 23, 1972 - The riders came from as far away as San Jose, Ventura, and Oxnard for a chance at the Big Hill in the CRC-sponsored Hillclimb at Running Springs. Despite the long distances travelled, despite the dust and the noise, there was no grumbling, for all were there to have a good time, and to master The Hill. Before the climb officially began the riders assessed the hill as best they could, taking practice runs up the side, walking part way up to test the traction and the angle. The riders' evaluation of the hill was unanimous. I t was an easy difficult hill with slippery good traction. Wes Evans' 250 Bultaco was the first to make it over the top, but as the bikes became larger many more riders successfully scaled the hill. It was Frank Durso, riding a Kawasaki in the 25'0 class and a BSA in the 650 class, who made the most successful climbs to become King of the Hill. This was quite a triumph for Durso since he was only recently released from the hospital after a serious stomach operation. One of the other more impressive performances of the day was turned in by Alice Hudnall (Yam), who not only finished highest in the 175 class, but also managed to finish a whole bottle of Cold Duck afterwards to celebrate. As one C RC official said before the climb began, "These hillclimbers are a special kind of people - part mountain goat." I didn't know moun tain goats could ride motorcycles...
