Let me say fast I agree with most of what the writer had to say regarding the poor conditions for spectators at Fremont. ' We have been wrestling with the PGE for months to get power in to the track. Only when we do, can we have decent restrooms, lights, etc. I do not want to run professional races at Fremont and we only did because the riders were after us to give them some races. Each race has lost over $600, a possible total of $2,000 to $3,000, which we do not cry about but rather felt it was a contribution to the sport to keep the riders busy. By 'doing some thing against our better judgment, and placing fmancial reward behind us, we open ourselves to criticism; part of the criticism is justified. Anyway, we do appreciate the writer taking the time to shOW up at the race. I honestly mean this, and if he will send me his address we will be pleased to send him a pass to our Labor Day AMA race at the San Jose County Fairgrounds. BOB BARKHIMER Scotts Valley, Calif. If Gary gets one·half of the bikes (SY,), DeWayne one-third (5-2/3 bikes), and Jimmy one-ninth (1.S9 of the bikes), they'll have to make custom kickstands for the odd percentages of bikes. . But SY" 5·2/3, and I.S9 do not add up to 17, but to 16.05. Then they add Bruce Baron's bike, divided the originals again, return Bruce's and everyone's happy. Bruce's bike wasn't actually needed, and someone is pulling a fast one on the Jones'. MIKE THATCHER S.G.V.M.C. Wait til' Don Jones h... rs about thisL.. Ed. President Nixon has received many letters and petitions from readers of Cycle News as a result of this resolution. Please express to your readers our appreciation for their in terest and concern in seeing that ample accommodations are available on public lands to meet the needs of the millions of outdoor recreation enthusiasts. We recognize the increasing use of all types of motorized off·road vehicles by the people in their search for recreational opportunities. It is our goal to provide ample areas and trails to meet the public demand for these activities. As competing uses and pressures increase upon the lands, we will strive to maintain a balance that will simultaneously protect the resources, minimize conflicts among the various uses, and promote the safety of all users of these lands. The Department recognizes the value in having the views of both users and nonusers in making decisions regarding the use of mo torized off·road vehicles on Federal lands. We are making every effort to encourage public participation in the rule making and regulations being developed for implemen tation of Execu.tive Order 11644. We encourage the support and assistance of all off-road vehicle enthusiasts in our efforts to provide for ample accommodations on the public lands to meet their demands for these activities. Their cooperation will be most helpful to us in maintaining responsible uses of Federal lands, and in the successful implementation of Executive Order 1164:4. W. W. LYONS Deputy Asst. This is just the issue I am taking. Why isn't a responsible adult, genuinely interested in being part of the mo torcycle scene, being told they cannot participate? It shouldn't matter whether that person is male or female, as long as he or she has the maturity and good judgmen t for correct conduct in pit area. I am afraid, Carol, until the laws are changed to definitely outline equality in this sport, women enth usiasts will find the deck stacked against them. A shame, too - for I feel the sport could use all . the active members and support it can get. A line shouldn't be drawn to exclude the women. MAXINE PERRY San ta Rosa, Calif. 'EQUAL TIME In reply to Thomas Hanson's letter on Alice Rhea's column, 1 have a few things to say. l' have a degree in Criminology 'and have been riding motorcycles for 12 years, so I think I'm well versed in both. I wasn't really sure 1 wanted to be charged $15 for 'using public fand, but after reading Alice Rhea's letter, J totally agree with her conclusions. I'm not really sure that my S15 would go towards more recreational land like the legislatures say it will, and probably a larger percent will be lost in the great bureaucracy we are living under. Furthermore, as to Mr. Hanson's comments about the self-selective disobedience of our youth, I can only say this country is in for a m'!-ss revolution if something isn't done to those individuals who squander the tax.payers' money on Wars, Space-shots, and the biggest white horse of them all, Long Beach's Queen Mary. Something must be done! MICHAEL A. BEATIY Long Beach, Calif. _ TIME The following is submitted for enduro time keeping and scoring: At each check point, use the number of the rider due at a ~heck instead of a time. In addition, have someone-hold a card up indicating the number due so the riders have some idea of how they are doing. At the end of the race it would be fast and simple to score the race. In fact, if the club were really ambitious, they could post the unofficial results of each rider five minutes after he came in. lt is an excellent system that has been used in, the east for quite some time. It would be nice to read the results in Cycle News the next week rather than wait three weeks after the race was finishe'd. Even Motor Mouth Schneiders likes this system so it has to be good. MIKE JONES Encino, Calif. THE FEMINIST Girls ride motorcycles, too. But who really knows it? We have to wear gloves that have a little excess (about IV,") on the end of each finger, a helmet that is too big, riding boots that are too big and so heavy that someone must help us lift up our feet. Men's leathers with the padding in all the wrong places and goggles that make us look like the Creature from the Planet Fly. But wait! Maybe we can be spotted. When you see a rider pass by with the biggest feet you ever saw attached to a .pair of leathers with padding in all the wrong places, take a second look. If the gloves have fingers that curl funny and the rider keeps tapping the top of his helmet because the wind catches it and pulls it up. That must be us: women motorcycle riderss. • JUDY ADAMS I n regards to Ron Schneiders' column in issue No. 2S, wherein he states that Harry Whalen ... " had the colossal bad taste to ask to have the minutes corrected to advocate filling the mine shafts in the desert with Sierra Club members... " Mr. Whalen did not ask to have the minutes corrected at the time when Jack Froelich, in the chair, asked for any . corrections or additions to the District minutes. Mr. Whalen's statement came later in the meeting as a tongue-in-<:heek voicing, as at a previous meeting it was suggested that mine shafts be filled with pit racers. MAUREEN LEE Recording Secretary District 37 Sports Committee M.O.R.E. PIT RACING Effective immediately, the only bikes allowed to be ridden in 395 Cycle Park during any H.R.A. or AM.A. event will be those competition bikes legally entered in that day's racing event. Speed limit for competition bikes is 10 M.P.H. and all pit racing fines will be forwarded to M.O.R.E., c/o Russ Sanford, Sacramento, Calif. Specially designed free riding areas had been made available in the park but the majority of riders have chosen instead to ride in the pit and spectator area. We regret that this announcement is necessary; however, the safety and comfort of all riders and spectators are OUf major concern. HOPE AND DONALD ENGLAND 395 Cycle Park Hurrah for you. We don't like pit racers and do like M.O.R.E .... Ed. BONNEVIllE INSPECTION TECH One of the major problems involved with Bonneville Speed Week is the safety inspection which is a very understandable requiremen 1. This year's safety tech line wiI.I be run differently in order to leave more time for racing and ease the burden on the officials. More than one half of the competitors at the salt are based in the Southern California area. These riders may avail themselves of the opportunity to have their rig completely safety inspected and OK'd prior to leaving for Bonneville. ' This inspection will be the real thing and no further inspections will be necessary upon reaching the salt. This should. cut the actual inspection time at the salt in half and allow the riders coming from other areas to be teched at a much faster ,rate. . The location for the tech line will. be at Flanders Co. parking lot in Pasadena - .at 34'0 S. Fair Oaks. The time wiI.I be _from J 1 a.m. until it's over. The date is " Saturday, August the 12th. r; - I(~ tY.:I>I"1 9 n, ·t '.
