By Maureen Lee I shouldn't be astounded, knowinghowmotorcycle people are, but the response to the "Friends of the Burtons' Night" isjust out of sight. I can't go anywhere without someone saying "When is it? We'U be there." Jim Hunter is working like mad rounding up the troops as well, so we'll keep you posted through this column or call Jim or 1. We're gonna lean on you to show up that night and whether you race or not, show. We just might even have name tags to put on you so the young sprouts know who they're looking at. Some of the guys want to ride, like Walt Axthelm who was number one in 1955 and number three in 1956 (yup, the same Walt who rides motocross today) ...and know what, Walt was the first American to ride in the ISDT in 1960. Anyway, the forces are fonning, .Gerry and Grace, and we hope to give you the biggest crowd you'll ever see at Perris. Everyone, but everyone is going to pay through the gate. Just to mention a few names who have confirmed they'll show are Skip Van Leeuwen, Dick Hammer, Jim Goldsmith and Malcolm Smith, plus a gang of other people. It goes back to the Early American tradition that when a neighbors' barn burns down, you help to raise it again. • • • ~~; Crollacraft (213) 427-7433 P.O. The 125cc Penton Trials, it's all aIIuminum (pardon me, aluminum) expensive perhaps, but you only gets what you pays for and Pen tons have proved their worth. : It seems lately that all I do is ask for you to send cards to the walking wounded. Well, this time it's Vic Wilson of Saddleback. He did his leg in going up the Matterhorn on a borrowed Triumph. After he won the Baja in a buggy I talked him into taking me around Saddleback in his and found out what the other half of the world is like. We did a couple of 180's on the fire roads (the park was closed to open riding that day,) and then proceeded through the boondocks. You know! Those guys have really got something and at least you have some shielding around you. Anyway, send Vic a carcf, he's been the mainstay at Saddleback since it opened so let him know you care. .. No, John is not in trouble. His trouble was that he opened up a shop when he's still righ t in there racing; most top riders only open up a shop when they are moving into retirement. John didn't. He's found out that you can't race while you have business worries going on in the back of your mind and he's got quite a few good years yet to go on the track before he calls it quits. How would you like to blast, into a tum and then all of a sudden wonder if the parts man ordered all the stuff you told him to? John, we all wish you the best of luck. I'm going to blow his wife's cover now because lots of us have asked why she hasn't been on a track. Well, when one is expecting one can't race motorcycles, that's for sure. but Pattie has been on tracks. Masquerading yet in the 125 class, Junior·Expert because her husband thinks that the safest place for her is with the men. Thinking about previous crashes, I say amen to that one!
