... M Orange County and qualifies for the award because he has never paved retail for anything. A close second in this category, after all the votes were in, was Rick Woods who manages to get everything for free. . The next award has no trick name but it is given to the track that, as decided by a consensus of the riders, has the worst racing s].lrface. The original votes from early in the season seeme:d to favor Indio but there has been a gre.at upset in the air and when the final votes were counted the winner was ....The Mantz Enterprises for their dedication to the idea that it is the same race track for everybody, no matter how bad it is. Next is the "Digger Helm Memorial Award" .which is given to a rider who sticks to it because he loves the sport, but never makes any money. The nominees were...Bill Arnold, Larry Sacramento SpeedwllY - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - By Bruce C. Young SACRAMENTO,CAL.,July 14, 1972Lancaster's little Les Chanky made his Hrst appearance this year and simply dazzled all those who came to see him do his thing. He simply tums the throttle on and never turns it off. Les had trouble on his Hrst race when his bike balked and did not make ten feet at the start. But in his Scratch heat, Match race and the Scratch Main, he blew off all competition. Les's only competition was from Reno rider John Cunningham who did everything he could to get past the little charger but to no avail. A t the start of the evening, the racing was really percolating with riders able to use every part of the track which was in near perfect condition tonight. The riders could pick any line and make it work. The temperature was near 100 degrees at this meeting but the racing was also red hot. Norman Denny of Denny's Honda really put things together tonigh t by taking his Handicap heat and Handicap Semi only to fall off during the Handicap Main while in contention for Hrst. Another newcomer making himself felt in tonigh t's race was Paul Ordandi. Paul switched over from motocross and really looks impressive. Paul won his Division 11 heat race and, like Norman, fell down in the Division II Main. The Match race of the nigh t was a near disaster when John Cunningham and Les Chanky tangled on the back straight and went down hard. The two came back after some adjustments to their bikes and really put on a show for everyone. Les led from the start to fmish. • The Handicap Main was another race that almost took every bike to the boneyard. Nearly every rider fell, leaving only three running at the end with Rich Hardmeyer in the lead; Mike and Pat Rooney righ t behind. Jim Doran made a bid for second on the fmal run for the flag but was unable to make it and finished fourth. Little Lester won the Scratch Main easily but the other riders in the event made their own race. Checkpoint Cycles put up their best: Barclay Trehal on his Jawa. Barclay took second place on the second lap and stayed there to the finish. Righ t behind Barclay was Butch Corder of Orangevale Motorcycles. Rich McMurray Hnished fourth to round out the Held. Earhart, Chuck Hatcher, Jim Doran and Eric Olesen. Since the original balloting over half of the nominees have "hung it up". Thusly, after much di~cussion the award was presented to Jim Doran who has ridden the longest and probably made the least amoun t of money for the effort. Slide on, Jim. The Hnal"Lefty" award is the biggie. Or is it the big banana? It is known as the "Ken Macly Broken Skid Shoe Strap Award." This award is given for excellence in riding instructions by a NON-rider. The nominees are: Harry OxleY,George Wenn, Peggy Mantz,Jerry Fairchild and fmally, Pete Palmer. Close voting all the way down the line on this award. The final balloting showed that George Wenn should be patted on the back as he rode home the winner by virtue of his catchy little phrase "That's how they do it in England." Well, that wraps up the second annual awards ceremony. 1'd like to apologize for making the column longer than normal but you know how awards ceremonies go. To those of you who felt sligh ted by no t even being men tiond as a nominee, that's tough. You nominees know where you must improve in order to win next time. Those of you winn~rs get our heartfelt congratulations on being recognized for your accomplishments(?) . By Pat Jones SACRAMENTO, CAL., July 7, 1972John Cunningham left a trail of sparks and three riders behind him as he won the Scratch Main Event at Cal-Expo Speedway. The aggressive Cunningham - who occasionally gives the impression he is riding a bulldozer instead of a Jawa jumped to an early lead despite his outside starting position and held it all the way for first Scratch Main win at Sacramen to. Despite a large lead, Cunningham ran the four laps as if Ivan Mauger were· chasing him and bounced off Expo's concrete walls several times on the way to first place. Stu Morley, who won the previous two Scratch Mains, finished second on his "Silver Tape Special." Probably the best all-around motorcycle rider in Northern California, Carl Cranke, won the Handicap Main. Cranke had a lot to 'celebrate Friday nigh t. In addition to his first win at Expo, Cranke had just learned he will be on the U.S. team at the I.S.D.T. in Czechoslovakia. Second spot in the Handicap Main went to Joey Henry who surprised a lot of people by outrunning Barclay Trehal for the runner-up spot. Henry, who got a late start ·this year, is beating a lot of people he isn't supposed to be able to beat. He won the Scratch Consolation by beating Butch Corde.r and Trehal, both of whom sport higher handicaps. John Dieu, who either beats everyone in sigh t or crashes, crashed. The Handicap Consolation saw a surprise as Ken Woods, starting on the 10-yard line, won over 40-yard men Corder and Rich MacMurray. Woods mo tored serenely around the track while Corder and MacMurray went nuts trying to get through tramc. They never found a path and Bill Duvall took second with MacMurray and Corder behind him.
