Cycleland Moto.cross ...;._ _,;... . By Janet West FRIENDWOOD, TEX., July 9, 1972 Gary Bailey was back in town for the Cycleland race July 9 th. As usual when Gary shows up, it rained! The muddy, sloppy, slimey track added a lot of excitement, though, so everyone was happy. In the first heat of the 250 Experts, Bailey had quite a chore can tending with Fred Hanna. Gary and Hanna swapped places several times, and Bailey WARD GETS A KAWASAKI JUMP WITH "Wicked" Bob Wa.rd, the young man who substituted for Evel Kneivel at the Lakewood Mile in Atlanta in May has signed with Atlan ta Kawasaki to make future jumps on the 350 Kawasaki. Just after he crossed the finish, Bailey's bike slid out for quite a spectacular. . Hanna was determined to get Bailey the second heat, and did. Although he didn't obtain first easily, Hanna did win. He and Gary traded places all through the heat, but this time Bailey fell. Something happened in the third heat, and Hanna didn't get a good start at all. Further problems ensued, and he was unable to catch up - fourth place was as close as Hanna could get. The 125 Experts had the roughest time - they were among the first to run and had all the slippery mud to contend with first. Kevin Brown (Pen) did really well in the first heat, finishing first. However, Kevin seemed to have bike problems, and didn't do quite as well the next two heats. Robb Riggs (Ric) rode quite well; Robb is getting used to his bike, and is haulin'. Another rider who is really coming up and who also rode nicely,. is Ralph Robertson (Pen). 80DYFUIL8YINDURa riders, ERIC JENSEN * BOB McLAUGHLIN * LARRY BERGQUIST * ED SCHEIDLER * WALT AXTHELM * LARRY HEARN * GEORGE MAGALLON M.D. MORE ENERGY AND ENDURANCE LESS MUSCLE STRAIN AND FATIGUE. Bill Urquhart rode an extremely consistent race, 'gaining a third place overall. Larry Priano created quite a spectacle in tlte Open J;;xpert in the last heat. Priano (Hus) and Robbie Esterlein (lfus) were running pretty hard for tlte checkered flag, with Esterlein in fr~lnt of Priano by a couple of bike lengths. Coming down the straigh t for the flag, Priano turned it on just a bit too much, and moments after Esterlein took the flag, Priano's bike followed! As soon as Larry was back on his feet, he ran after his bike, picked it up, and pushed it over the line before third place, H~rold Hendricks (Yam), came around! l:l " i' '''- ... '" Ol -' U'.S. The. most exciting races of the day occurred in the 125 Expert and the 250 Expert. Ronnie Dement pushed his Honda hard to take a first place through consistency. Craig Glover (Man) was probably the fastest rider in the 125 Expert, bu t continual bike trouble kept him to a second place. Ralph Robertson (Pen), had he placed higher in the first heat, would very probably have won overall as he ran a strong second and first in the last two heats. Bobby Robertson upheld the family name in the 250 Expe,rt. In the first heat, Tyler Simpson (CZ) gave ORSTEN HALLMAN.~ ~ RACING INC.•:-:~~. Joe Whittier (Pen), DeWitt Knott (Pen) and Mack McKinley got after it in the 125 Expert class, providing plenty of entertainment, especially during the third heat. Whittier came au t tops, winning with relative ease. Knott even tually dropped back in the third heat, due to the mud or bike trouble, or maybe just plain exhaustion. McKinley (Ric) took second overall. Bill Kasson rode a new 7I5cc Penton in the 250 Expert class, and placed second overall. Ken t Howerton (Yam) was the overall first. place winner. Kasson got the better starts, but the 250cc Yamaha just outpowered the Pen ton in the straigh ts. Frank Hadler (Yam) had quite a battle with Suzuki-mounted David, Greene, in taking third. Jack Hicks was out, but not riding. He injured his knee again playing tennis - for some that was pretty good news. fOI Big Spring Optimists' M X - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - By David Freeman BIG S'PRING, TEX., July 2, 1972 The Hi-Noon Optimist Club of Big Spring, Texas sponsored a benefit race for the Dora Roberts Rehabilitation Center. The sunny afternoon saW ninety-six riders from Texas and New Mexico invade Big Spring Motocross Park to compete for twenty-one trophies and a purse of forty percen t of the gate. The day's event was topped off with a husband and wife motocross race. In the most exciting race of the day, Danny Weir beat out Kelly Guinn, and Jay Henry of Carlsbad, New Mexico, in the 125 Senior. The lead changed hands several times .during the cQmpetition as the three Pen tons battled it out. In the end, it was Danny Weir, first; Kelly Guinn, second; and thirteen-year-old Jay Henry in third. The Western Yamaha Racing Team was hot as Kelly's younger brother, David Guinn, mastered the 100 Senior race while Corky Burchell won the 125 Junior and Crazy Gene Leonard took second place honors in the Open Junior.
