TT Scrambles at Indian Dunes - - - - - - - - - - - - - - By John Grout VALENCIA, CAL., July 4, 1972 Racing for the TT machinery returned to Indian Dunes today, and in the midst of 161 competitors who had gathered for the early afternoon warfare, Gene Cannady was more conspicuous than an elephan t performing in a flea circus. With fourteen differen t divisional wins up for grabs, Cannady , taking his first ride on the new high-speed Dunes track, garnered a pair of Overalls defeating both the 125 and Open Experts during six mota-type heat races. In annexing the one-two-five score, Cannady waged a hard-fough t battle on his DKW with John ''The Ironman" Rice, Bob Vacca, and Joe GranateUi, among others. His 500cc win came at the expense of riders such as Bill Payne, Dan Hudson, Jim Harnisch and Carl Nelson. Payne had to be the hard luck rider of the day. After winning the first two races for the big-bores, his Maico blew during die final moto, thus leaving the victory to Cannady (Yam). Action among a swift field of 250 Experts was a real cliff-hanger among Mark Cook (Bul), Rick Salmon (CZ), Randall Lewis (Man), Allen Cooke (CZ) and Steve Kohler (Ric), before they finished in that order. Powered by a Triumph-engined rig, Bob Hudspith and Jerome Wahl zipped to a close overall among a large group of sliding sidehacks. Runners.up included: Tomlinson-Palfreyman (Wasp), Dudley-Reed (Yam) and Ramsdon-Monohan (Yam). Both Mike Brown, astride one of the new Monarks, and BuJtaco-mounted Jimmy Gappa were able to score perfect, three-far-three wins, to come out on top of their particular Junior-classed events. Other Junior victors were Mark Raiche, Bob Clark, Jerry Neukam and Scott Pelkey. Amateur winners were: Kevin Dwyer, Joe Erwin and Larry Blum.
