Then DueHamel moved his 350 Kawasaki single into third and moved up on Greene who was closing in on Fisher. Yvon tucked in hehind Greene looking for a place to pass. In tum three of lap nine Yvon made his move swallowing hoth of them in one breath. The Fearless Frog held it, even stretched it out a bit for two laps, but then the sun came out, and Fisher's Yamaha seemed to find some encouragement, and that apparently inspired Fisher. Down the hill from turn six he came, going very quickly through the closing radius tum seven, and then picking a graceful sweeping line through tum eigh t, a line which carried him pas t Yvon and back in to the lead. Then, smoothly but fiercely, Gary proceeded to stretch it out. About this time, Yvon's bike soured just a hair, slowing him almost impercep tibley on the straigh ts. Whether or not he could have caugh t the Flying Fish anyway is hard to tell. But Gary himself was riding under a handicap. One eye had been giving him trouble in the last week and the doctor hadn't had time to correct it. So Gary was riding with very litle vision in one eye. The Kawasaki of Gary Nixon soured also and fmally quit. Greene was still running third ahead of Carruthers and Pierce who were havinl':. their usual dice. Then Mike Lane Fisher leads Greene, DuHamel, Carruthers. and Pierce through "the corkscrew". Jim Evans was second on his Mel Dinesen Yamaha, but Jerry was pulling out a second a lap and lboking relaxed in the process. "I could have gone faster if I'd had someone to race with," he said later.
