HOCKING HOT AT fAST fREMONT
~.
By Bill Spencer
FREMONT, CAL., July 1,1972 - Dave
Hansen parlayed a seized piston in
II>
practice in to an upset Main victory over
~
four time winner Rick Hocking in one
w
Z
of the most exciting battles ever
W
witnessed at Fremont Raceway's very
..J
U
fast one-Many riders seized pistons from the
U
onset. Hansen was the first and while he
was doing the sanding, practice cen tered
quickly around Bobby Goodman who
seized and tangled with Jim Odom.
Goodman complained of a hurt
shoulder while Odom couldn't use his
left foot.
As it turned out, Goody separated
three vertebrae in his back and will be
sidelined for a few weeks. It was worse
for Odom, no way to ride the San Jose
National next day.
Starting out the night's action was a
fierce duel in the number one heat
between Al Kenyon and Hocking.
Kenyon had vowed to even up the score
with the little Novice and got the heat
with a wire to wire win over the
Yamaha fireball. Hocking's new (old)
Champion Yamaha tried every trick to
get around the veteran "King", but the
old Bultaco was having none of it.
It was double sweet for Hocking's old
sponsor, Steve Doi, as the Mt. View
Auto Stereo bunch had signed Pat
Hennen and John Gennai to join the
stables and Henpen conjured up a win
and Gennai a third in the second heat.
Hansen lined up for his heat with
some appre~ension, but he set second
fast time of the nigh t, behind Kenyon,
and came back for fast time win in the
Semi.
The other Semi was a battle between
Hocking and Kenyon with the little kid
coming out the winner over the
National oldster. This was to set the
scene for the IS-lap Main.
The start was probably the most
_difficult part of the Main as the front
row had two National numbers and
some of the hottest shoes around. As
starter Odom mounted th<: starting box,
the anticipation was rampant. It was a
false one· as Odom hesitated one

..,
ten-thousandth of a second too long and
the lineup job began once again.
This time there was no waiting. Just
about the time that Hoy Odom was
thinking about throwing the flag,
Hansen had dropped the clutch and was
headed for the first tum. Hocking took
up the second place charge with Ed
Rosman charging from the back row for
third over Kenyon.
That was short lived, AI got by on the
next lap and took off in hot pursuit of
Hocking. While- AI never did get by the
Yamaha, he caught it. Those two diced
for some laps while Hansen crept away
and Hennen and Gennai kept ·the Doi
motors close: .
On the ninth lap, Hocking started to
close on the Hansen Suzuki. On the
13th go-round, he caught up with
Hansen but it was getting close to the
end and Hocking just couldn't get up
the necessary stuff to make a pass.
The last two laps were so close and
thrilling that the score.. in the tower
had to get up to see, over the screaming
mob. Of the twelve starters there were
nine Bultacos around "at the finish and
they were all behind the Suzuki and the
Yamaha. Doi gets the consistency award
with a 3rd, 4th, 5th, and lOth.
AI Kenyon (481 and Rick Hocking did the hot,hoe thing ail night at Fremont Short Track.
