Werner Schutz, the German Maico pilot well known to - many Southern Californians, passed Mark at one point but he crashed soon afterward. Werner came back to eam second place in the 125cc Support class aboard a Zundapp. Weil also led the second heat and Aberg with a different Husky held second for awhile before Ake Johnson pushed Aberg back to third spot. Mark started the second heat in ninth place but after five laps he was sixth and racing with Wiertz. By Strawberry Enterprises and Terry Pratt II LAUBUS - ESCHBACH, GERMANY, July 2, 1972 - Riding a steady and well calculated race, Californian Mark Blackwell scored a third overall in an International motocross meeting in Germany. The race was won by veteran Adolf Weil and another member of the Maico Grand Prix team, Ake Johnson was second. In the first of two 40-minute heats Wei! was pressured by Husqvama team rider Bengt Aberg but at the mid-way pain t Aberg's titanium frame cracked and he dropped back two laps. At this point Weil had the race sewn up and the field began to string out. But then Wiertz' expansion chamber loosened up and he began to slow down. Mark poured on the gas and came within a few inches of catching the Belgian at the finish. Wen and Jonsson were first and second place but Wiertz, Blackwell and Aberg were all tied on pain ts. Aberg was a lap behind because of his trouble in the first race and Blackwell's overall time was better than Wiertz' so Mark was awarded third overall. This week Blackwell will compete in the British Motocross Grand Prix where Roger DeCoster will try to defend his narrow five point lead against Heikki Mikkola. HotShoe's HotLine Dear AMXT followers, Just one week before the English GP and Bryan and the Maico are in top form. After a speedy recuperation from a mid·week 16-mile bicycle race between two Swedes and two American motocrossers, Bryan rode well enough in Sunday's international to rate a round of compliments from the organizer, M. Seery, a French Federation VIP. The race was an eigh t nation international near LeMans. Favorites in the newspaper were Andy Lee and Dave the a1m<;lst legendary N icoJl, four-strokers. This week they reversed their winning order from ~e last. Nicoll won a clean slate, Lee in second. The menacing clouds during practice Ie t go their fury by race time and quickly turned the track to mud. The first mota Nicoll took the lead followed by Lee, Laquaye, a top runner in the Belgium championship, and Kenney. The fifteenth lap looked much the same as the first with Bryan in fourth place and holding off Baumgarten (Germany) and Engstrom (Sweden). The second mota Nicoll, Lee and Laquaye got good starts leaving the rest of the pack to battle among themselves. This round Engstrom and Baumgarten, determined to top the American, got off quicker than he. As for the German, Bryan had no trouble showing him his rear tire. Unfortunately, Engstrom, the Husky works development rider on the new 360, was not to be had. With the rain and the supporting side car race to tear up the track, the racing was considerably slowed down. Several mouthfuls of mud later, Bryan still had Engstrom well in sigh t, but couldn't manage to get around him. Third mota Nicoll and Lee outpowered the rest up the (long hill after the straigh t except for one Bryan who was righ t on their heels. The Beige, Laquaye, didn't have the start dialed in and was left to work up through the field and avoid the mud spray from the bikes in fran t. Baumgarten was no menace his rear shock broke early in the race; Engstrom was somewhere behind in the muddle of racers. It was an exciting 15 laps with Bryan inching up on Lee every turn. The checkered flag ended the racing when Bryan was only a few feet from taking second place. The BeIge finished fourth a good distance away. The rest of the runners were even further out of sight. Nicoll, Lee,· Laquaye, Kenney and Engstrom rounded off the first five overall. Enough international races for the moment - we're off across the Channel to Farleigh Castle to ride the seventh round of the World Championship series. Bryan and Mark are both entered on the program.
