CRC at Running Springs III N > :; .., III := W Z W ...J U >- U Next Week: Inter·AMA at Elkhorn, Wise. By Christopher OstIind RUNNING SPRINGS, CAL., July 8, 1972 - Saturday's CRC MX turned out to be hair-raiser event for the 125 and 175 classes as hidden surprises weJ:e lurking, around the next tum. Some guy in a truck got himself on the back side of the track (He said later that he was look.ing for the way to the swimming hole and didn't know how he got mixed up.) and scared the living daylights out of leader Shawn Huffman as he was confronted with a truck coming right at him. All the other riders had to face a similar situation with one guy allegedly hitting the truck. How he got on the track is still a mystery as the backside acc,ess road is blocked by cones and surveyor's tape. The race was restarted and Huffman won it going away to sweep the 125 Novice motos for the Overall. Dick Smallwood (Hus) finally broke a long string of victories by. CZ rider Robbie Giles as he put it all together to win two out of three motos. Giles' bike was not up to its usual, form as he _ repeatedly loaded up and only got running right in the second mota to beat Smallwood. Oldtimer Ron Perry put his 175 engine into his son's Yamaha 90 frame so he could blow the old dudes into the weeds, but all he did was snap the chain and take a third behind speedy John Underwood and Robert Harman who both ride Yamahas. The Old timers who ride out at Running Springs think that they have it CMC S a d d l e b a e k - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - By Randy Dietzel ORANGE, CAL., July 16, 1972 - It was another hot, dry, and dusty day in Orange County for the CMC's weekly motocross. Many of the hot shoe Experts were not on hand, probably due to the Inter-AMA series, bu t the ones. who showed up put on a great show. The 500 Experts ran first with Rich Thorwaldson on his Suzy dusting the entire field from start to finish. Greg Smith (Mai) tired to keep pace but couldn't catch Rich and settled for second. "Feets" Minert on his BSA-MX was consistent as usual and finished third. ' In the second go around, Minert jumped out in the lead with Grel( Smith, Dave Smith (Mai) , and Thorwaldson hot on his tail. By lap two, Thorwaldson was even with Minert tooting his horn to pass. Minert was giving his all, but Rich's Suzuki was too much for the BSA. Once past Minert, Rich stretched his lead never to be caugh I., Meanwhile Greg Smith came up and passed Minert also. At the finish it was a carbon copy of mota one with the results for the day reading Thorwaldson, Smith and Minert. Gaylon Mosier dominated the 250 Experts en tirely winning both of his motos hands down. Terry Clark (Hus), Jon Derhammer (CZ), and David Boydstun were hot at it for second. After constant dicing back and forth, Clark came au t second in both motos for a second overall. Derhammer placed fourth and third in that order for third overall. The 125 Experts put on the best show all day. In mota one Terry Clark won on IUs Baja prototype with Barry Porter on a Bul closing fast for second. With Clark up on points the second mota proved exciting as Porter jumped out to a tremendous lead. Chuck Bower (Pen) passed Clark and was chasing Porter hard. When Porter realized that Bower was closing he started smoking. But Bower was hot tp win and nearly caught him .but time ran out with Porter finishing first by a narrow margin, but good enough for first overall. Terry'Trachy (CZ) rode both the 250 and 500 Intermediate classes and really shined. He finished first overall in both classes and has to be a can tender for Expert class in the near future. Brian Breker brought his HuskV in from the desert to dominateUSMRC motocross at EI Taro. He's fast wherever he rides. USMRC MX at EI T o r o - - - - - - - - - - - L ~. ~~ t:Jt4tIe~ ~t4. It belongs to Bryan Breker, hotshot USMRC newcomer. Tonight Breker broke the longstanding Bruce Baron monopoly, sweeping over such well knowns as Chuck Bower (Pen), Ron Bandy (CZ), and Davy Carlson (Yam). Bruce couldn't very well defend his spot, being out with a damaged foot. He watched from the sidelines as Breker, Bower, and Bandy finished overall in that order. Gary Cochell (Bul) made the 500 easy pickin's for Breker by failing to make the third mota. Bob Madden (CZ) and Robert Crecelius (Gre) picked up top spots in the Intermediate. The 100 Int/Ex. class earned the Thrills-and-Spills award, especially faT the first mota. Within the space of one lap, the top three positions were shuffled at least five times. Nothing was certain until the finish, a very dose thing between Carlson, Joe Flores (Hod), and Morris Malone (Kaw). Unfortunately, Davy didn't fare so well in Mota 2, taking a hard spill in the outback. A quick run to the hospital showed everything was in working order, but Carlson was out of the running. (ft's hard to race when you walk ,arq!JncL mu ttering, "Who am I, _ anyway?") This allowed Malone to take over the lead, with Jack Hazard and Bah Rowe second and third overall on their Yamahas. Brad Salata (Ric) easily took first Intermediate with a sweep. The 125 Expert boasted.' a star-studded cast including Bower, Carlson, Dave Rogers and-Ray Lopez on Buls. The class fell to Chuck Bower with .Rogers and Shane McDonald (Bul) settled in to second and third. Enough Intermediates showed up to have their own class in the 125 and 250. Clay Southerland (Yam) and John Van Breukelen (YaJ!l) conquered the 125, as Lucky Merritt returned to take on the 250 successfully. The 100 Junior Division I was' a Hodaka class) with the top four riding that bike. Dave Hancock took first overall with an easy sweep. Division II had two contenders who managed a tie for first: James Poe (Yam) and Dennis Sigalos (Hod). _ Pokie Seeman took the 125 Junior Div. I on his Red Mountain Special and Division II suffered a tie of its own between the Yamahas of Don Wickham and David Willis. Dennis Miles (Bul) snared Division I of the 250 Junior, but the surprise in Division II was first-time-outer Mike Cooper (CZ) in a sure sweep. Another sweeper was Dave Bradley (Hus) in the 50(:) Junior. Mark Weaver won over a full field ':of,ScbQOlbo~) OR lhis.Honda. '0
