, NATIONAl" ")~~ place in the National points race seemed hanging in the balance. Beauchamp began pulling away from Brelsford on lap eight with the battle for fourth the real race. Roberts passed Palmgren with Romero being dogged by Rayborn. Suddenly, just shy of the halfway mark, Beauchamp's Harley turned sour and Brelsford moved by, as did Rice. A quarter of a mile later Rex pulled off the track in despair. Now, Mark was on his way. , Heading into lap 14, Brelsfori!- had stretched out a tremendous lead o'\. Rice. Palmgren re-passed Roberts for third and Rayborn zapped Romero for fifth. Still in seventh was Scott, now ready to make his bid. Lap 17 finished and Gary had passed Roberts for fourth. Brelsford, unbeatable, stretched his lead to nearly a full straight over Rice. Lap 18 found Palmgren back in fourth with Scott still moving. Bu t time was gone and only Gillespie could garner a late race maneuver which put him in sixth ahead of Rayborn and Sehl. Romero had dipped to ninth ahead of Mashburn, who spilled early and re-entered three laps down. Castro retired shortly after Beauchamp and fmished 11th. The points race continues to remain t~ht. Brelsford, who has yet to finish worse than fourth in his seven Nation,",s, holds the top spot with his third National win of the year at 882. Scott holds second at 712 by virtue of his consistency. Roberts has Romero with 641 and 617, respectively. Rounding out the top five is Rice, scoring 580 points in the five Nationals he's attended. JUNIORS With the wobby tum three clairmng more than its share of Juniors, the Junior Main promised to be a wild show. It was. Jim Crenshaw, Norton rider from , , .; ....... ..-..... om page ~ Northern California, surprised a strong con tingen t. in the heat by winning and came back to add insult to injury by methodkally taking a wire-to:wire win in the Main. Tom White (Tri) , winner of the other heat, took over second on lap two, chasing Jim all the way to the checkered. Tom Horton (Tri) seemed set for third until Scott Brelsford (H-D) scooted by him on lap 11. Brelsford started out in contention, clipped the hay bales, and surprisingly held his position. But, a lot of ground was lost which he never made up. Higbly-expectant Larry Gino (Tri) had all kinds of trouble staying on the groove and faded all the way back to ninth. Mike Renslow (Yam) outlasted a wild Novice group on Saturday to win that portion of the program. In a special Indoor Short Track race Saturday nigh t, Gary Scott zeroed in and won going away over Randy Skiver and Al Kenyon. 20-LAP NATIONAL July 9, 1972 BSA Trl Tri Mike O'Brien Tri Jim Foley Dan Mangano .
