(Contin ued from page 11) their feet, closed the gap on Hansen . Torleif ain't number one around the Husqva rna factory for nothing and he was moving -fast. With five minutes to go, Marty went past him, on the inside. A roar of acclaim wen t up from the stands the likes of which you just don't hear at motocro ss courses . Tripes held on for the five minutes , building up a slig,h t lead to take second, and the overall win. After he got hy Hansen , it was almost anticlim actic, but not quite. Marty was happy, his father looked Yamah a the happie r, even represen tatives were about to burst and who had never seen an those Inter-A MA, or any other kind of motocro ss, before troopin g in to the Coliseu m had seen one devil of a good show. In the Nationa l Suppor t Class, Bryar Holcom b manage d to cap off a current hot streak, riding John DeSoto 's former Suzuki to two firsts and a second. His main compet ition seemed to come from Gary Chaplin , first moto winner, when his Maico was running . Bryar was con stan tly pressue d by Barry Higgins and, to a lesser extend by Bob Hershey who was plagued with crashes and mechan ical breakag es. (Sorry about that, Papa Wealey. ) Bryar seemed kind of hang loose and very fast abou t the whole thing. He is, needles s to say, r- -- -· -- -- -- -.. l- happy with his new ride. Barry Higgins gave CZ their top place with consiste nt, trouble- free rides in the last two motos to finish second overall. The track held up very well, the riders and the made promot ers spectato rs happy, Super Joe made his jump success fully, laying his Triump h down in the haybale s after getting back down on the landing ramp this time, and all of Cycle News pre-race picks .were wrong. How do you figure on a record in track no with rider internat ional compet ition to take first overall? You can't, unless you've seen Marty Tripes cow-tra il around an MX course faster than anybod y else is racing over it. N .... The first turn was so tight you were lucky to be holding your own From the grandstand By Bruce Flander s Cycle News called me during the week and asked if I were going to the Yamaha Inter-AM A Superbo wl of Motocro ss. Hek, yes! said 1. They asked me to put my impress ions down on paper. 'By way of some qualific ation, I have been to and announ ced at over 45 motocro sses this year, includin g places like Lions', Corona , Ascot and the like. First impress ion: TWO DOLLA RS TO PARK? Inflatio n is really going to work in this departm ent. The track was a challeng e to any motocro sser. The first thing I thought when I saw it was that it would be an aholute parade from start to finish. It turned out that I was terribly wrong because every hotshoe that wanted to get by a slower rider could find room at will. Vic Wilson and his crew from Saddleb ack are to be congrat ulated on putting in a track that not only held up well but survivea the changes forced On it by the riders and Coliseu m officials . The SGVMC member s did a great job of flagging and restring ing all the banners every time the ride... would wipe out a section. The finish flagman did a great job of confusi ng everyon e by waving the flag so fast the nobody could figure out for sure which flag he was using. be to you're l-!uetter , John congrat ulated too. I underst and you laid some interest ing info on the fans but where I was sitting the sound system was inaudib le over the din. Speakin g of sound systems , the audio at the Coliseu m left lots to be desired. It's not the fault of Larry Huffma n because he did the best job possible under rather trying circums tances. The fault lies with the fact that the sound in the bowl is probabl y adequa te when twen ty -two sets of shoulde r pads hit at full speed but can't cut it when thirty-fi ve .two·str okes :l"' getting it 00, silencer s or , _ not. If you were sitting in one of the many places where the speaker s weren't even turned on, you missed some interest ing poop. It was a shame that there wasn't room at the starting gate for all the riders. A second row start has got to be a terrible disadva ntage, especial ly when a little over 50 yards later it filtered down to one abreast. Speakin g of tigh t first comers , that one at the 'bowl just had to be painf'hl. How would you like to look down at your handleb ars and not even be able to find them in the confusi on? Of course, the other guys on this page are raving about Mr. Marty Tripes, but unless you were there you couldn' t have seen that kid standin g on the pegs wbat seemed like 90% of the time, when he flat did the job on all the big names. While on the subject of big names, where in the heck were th ose two dudes .that ride factory Suzook s? I ended up sitting next to (and helping when he needed to make a head call) Larry Huffma n and nobody ever told him. It's a shame when the announ cer isn't given , proper info. A stopwat ch told an in terestin g tale about "Mr. Hard Luck from Lions" Bryar Holcom b. It seems that some of his times were faster than the 250 big names. Sure, I know he was on a 400 but it was not a horsepo wer track. And now a word about "Super Joe". Why didn't you warm your Triump h up in the pits instead of making seven or eight warm-u p passes? It seems that the same man who set up the sound system did the job of rearrang ing the ligh ting in the bowl. The east end was, at best, poorly lit. Mike Goodw in and the crew from Leisure Tech did a fine job, especial ly when you stop to conside r just how many obstac·le s were placed in their way as they went along. Maybe we'll be lucky enough to see another one of tbe~ "Superb owls" next year. I CYCLE NEW S PROD UCTS P.O. B." ••B LO~9 .eac h, Ca. 9080 1. 1--------------'"'" 'OeD " " '.. ----------1 IFO .
