Sadd leba ck-- ---- ..:. :.;; .:;: ~~:O
By Buzz Baty
IRVINE , CAL., July 8, 1972 - If Jeff
Szueber isn't leading in the AMC
Yamaba Series, he should be, accordi ng
to my reckoni ng. Every time I look
around, he's winning the 500 Junior
division . Jeff did it again today, taking
his Husky to first overall, ahead of the
CZ of Bob Dykma ns and Dave Orozco 's
Suzuki.
The only comple te manufa cturers'
sweep came in the 125 Novice class,
where John Dickens on bested ..Cesar
Rodil and Ed Boggs, all on Pentons .
Hey, here's a fun thing for July 22,
particul arly if you're a fan of ABC's
Wide World of Sports. The WW crew.
will be out at SaddJeb ack that day,
""-- .... ;,-- -
along with Bill Russell, the super star of
the Celtics basketb all club and Gary
Bailey.
The gig goes someth ing like this, Gary
Bailey is going to teach Bill Russell how
to ride a Yamaha 250 MX. Then Bill is
going to ride in one of the Beginne r 250
classes, while the camera crews record it
for posterit y.
Can't you just see that?, big Bill
Russell, seven feet, one and a half inches
tall, two hundred and seventy -five
pounds on a 250 Yamab·..... Hell, you
won't even be able to see the bike, let
alone film it. At any rate, if you want to
be part of the scene, the AMC event at
Saddleb ack on the 22nd of July will be
the place to be.
CMC CARL SBAD - - - - - - - - - - - - - By Buzz Baty
CARLS BAD, CAL., July 9, 1972 Things were a little lackada isical today.
Perhaps everyon e was still physica lly
exhaust ed and men tally drained from
last night's Coliseu m extrava ganza. No, I
really can't say that about the riders
that showed today, 'cause it sure wasn't
true about Rich Thorwa ldson, Mark
Anders on, or Hugh William s in the 500
Expert class.
Mark got it on with Rich again, after
last Tuesda y's duel when Mark fell.
Today, he brough this CZ in for second
overall behind Rich and his Boyd- &
Stelling s Suzuki, Hugh Williams getting
third on his Husky.
Last night's Open Suppor t class
winner, Bryar Holcom b brough t out a
truck load of Suzukis , engines , and
frames, and spent the whole day testing.
It looks like Suzuki may have big plans
for Holcom b.
_
(Jay Ion Mosier added a few more
points in his quest for the CMC Numbe r
I plate and that Chevy van that goes
with it, but it wasn't easy. Jon
Derham mer, who seems to be getting
faster and better every time ou t, took
his CZ to a long lead first moto win over
Gaylon 's Maico.
Howeve r, as with last week's win,
Gaylon came back to win the second
moto to Jon's second place finish, tieing
Jon on points, but getting first overall in
the "best finish-la st moto" rule. Terry
Clarke filled out the top three on his
Harley- Davidso n.
Terry also won the 125 Expert
division on the H-D, over the Pen tons of
Chuck Bower and Rick Ruckma n. This
is the third straigh t race that Rick has
been in the money. This new Expert
really digs that long green manufa ctured
by Uncle Sam.

-CRC MX - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - By Christo pher Ostlind
DEADM ANS POINT, CAL., July 9,
1972 - Conside ring the fact that a lot
of Souther n Californ ia race fans were
tired from last night's big show at the
Coliseu m, there was still a good turnout
for the CRC MX.
With the tempera ture righ t around
100 the only thing that made it liveable
was the wind. Howeve r, Morgan
Molocc o (Yam) and Randy Fredrick son
(CZ) didn't seem to mind the heat a bit
as they tore up the track and any
compet ition to domina te the 250
Novice -16 class.
For the over sixteen 250 Novice
riders, the guys to beat were Jim Rich
on a Suzuki and Steve Aageson on a
Husky. Mike Hogan won motos one and
three but didn't cop any points for the
-
second and that dropped him to third
overall.
125 Novice riders Bruce Jones (Puc),
George Faber (Yam), and Paul Dube
(Suz) had it out all day. In the end, it
was J ones getting the overall on the
strength of two firsts and a second.
Kern Park (Hod) got the overall win
in the 100 Novice section as speedy
Bruce Bornhu rst and his Harley blew
the first moto with a fourth place finish,
droppin g him to a second overall For
the Beginne rs under 16 there was a third
Harvey
moto showdo wn between
Hollow ay (Hod) and Mike Brophy
(Suz). Both were tied with a first and
second place finish each. Both riders
were con tinually looking back to see
what was going on behind them.
Eventua lly Hollow ay got a sizeable lead
and won going away.
