I' - M USMRC MX at EI Toro---- 1 By Pat Gross EL TORO, CAL., June 30, 1972 Ligh tnfug struck twice with fireworks labeled Bruce Baron and Dave Carlson. These two super-flashes combined to dazzle an unprecedented packed field of Experts. In so doing, they spirited away the greater portion of the purse. Davy with a grand total of 85 smackeroos, Bruce with a whopping $120. Azu\lga! That was Carlson jetting to his favorite front spot in the 100 Intermediate/Expert. And that's where he stayed for the remaining two motos. Mark Tyer (Hod) would have had a hard time holding on to second if Joe Flores had not dropped ou t of the second moto. As it was, Flores finished fourth with Morris Malone (Kaw) filling in third. Randy Myers surprised the 125 Experts with his snappy start in the first moto. It took three laps before Baron could bring his Husky into passing position, but from then on it was easy ridin'. Myers was out with apparent bike trouble later in the evening, and Carlson's two first place finishes gained him only a second behind overall winner Baron. . Baron's Yamaha took the 250 in stride, easily besting a scrambled mob of Experts. Ajay-moun ted Malone garnered a strong second, Dave Miller (Costella) took third, but Carlson's first, fourth, and last finishes netted a mere fourth. Positions reversed from last week. Gary Cochell, on a new Bultaco, pulled in ahead of Bryan Breker (Hus) in the. 500 Intermediate/Expert. The Intermediates fmished equally dose in points: Steve Johnson (Gre), Brad Salata (Hus) , Vern Maxwell (Bul). Billy Bobp is the new name to watch in the In termediates. Transferred a few weeks ago, he is fast gaining attention. In his fLrst race as an Intermediate, John Van Breukelen (Yam) sizzled to a close second behind Bobp. Hondas handled the Schoolboy races, headed by Gene Woods. Brad Dutoit battled to second and Jeff Wilson brough t up third in a swarming crowd of twelve minibikes. Sandy Termin (KDW) had no trouble taking the limited last·minute Powder Puff class. Stacey Craghead and Chris Fields' Yamahas rounded out the field. N .... Cll lXl > :; .., en ~ w Z W ...J U >U CMC at Ascot - - - - - - By Greg Owen GARDENA, CAL., June 28, 1972 From the looks of the "all new" motocross track the whole Ag';janian family must have been out tilling the soil. Would you believe that for the first time in Ascot motocross history, benns actually built up? It's mie and the riders had nothing but praise for the changes. Jeff "Mr. Ascot" Wright (Puc)' once again proved his supremacy on this track. Jeff won all three motos and never flustered. Chuck Bower dried himself off after his little side trip into the Ascot pond. He then went on to cap rure second overall aboard his Metto-tuned Penton. John Volkman wound up in third. The 250 Expert wars continued this week with more exuberance than ever. Bob Hosford is out to prove that four·strokes are better. He flew his Honda XL 250 to an overall victory. Please believe me when I say it was no cake walk. Luke Messer (Oss) really made Hosford work for his win. Luke pocketed second place cash while Tim Hart (Mai) placed third. It was a Maico sweep in th'e Open Expert go around. The leader of the pack just happened to be Trans·Am allstar, Tim Hart. Tim led a Maico contingent induding second place Billy Payne and third place J. Snow to the Victor's Circle. Ken Zahrt took his speedy Sui to an overall in a competitive R.A.C.E. expert field. R.A.C.E.at Corona--------------------------------By Buzz Baty CORONA, CAL., June 29, 1972 - On one of the nicest nights of the year (After the sun went down; before that, it was hotter than hell.), Corona Raceway reached a milestone in its short history of motocross. Two hundred and one riders put on one whale of a show for over one thousand spectators, sitting in the stands, covering the hillside and lining the pit wall, shoulder to shoulder. It was a nigh t that saw Bruce Baron come from dead last, after he was left on the starting line with a dead engine, to finish sixth in the 125 Expert moto. It was one of the best rides I've ever seen him put on, and to have it all go for naught. Ken Zabrt and his Bultaco, Jeff Vidic in one of the best rides to date on the Penton, Bultaco-mounted Ray Lopez and John Hrynkiewicz finished in that order, shutting out Baron~s Husky, and splitting up the Expert share of $390 purse. Bill Henderson, in his fourth week as CMC ASCOT------------------------------ NONO DAVID NorVil is MX Champ In the motocross world there is one official F .1M. Championship that most Americans seem to overlook. In Europe it is as fiercely contested throughout the seasOn as any class, and for spectacle cannot be beaten. Norton Villers engines powered their way to victory in this event in 1971 and to date it looks as if they will repeat the success in '72. No fewer than five Norton V ilIiers-engined machines fill the first five places. In case you MX aces are beating your heads to puzzle out where Suzuki dropped out last yeai', it's in the Side Hack Championships, the roughest of all MX events. Perhaps Aldana or Gillespie should consider this sport next year and maybe hrin.. home our Hrst MX Championship. an Expert, has quite a record. Two seconds and a third overall, and tonigh t, it was Big Casino. He had first place in line at payoff time for the 250 Experts, taking the measure of Chuck Lunde, Doug Sherman, andJon Derhammer, all CZ mounted. Henderson rode his 250 Yamaha to three solid seconds, behind Lunde and, Sherman, who each won at least one moto, but just weren't as consistent in their riding nor were their scoots as trouble free as Bill's Yamaha. Ray Lopez turned double wins on successive days in the 125 Expert class. By Buzz Baty GARDENA, CAL., July 5, 1972 David Pessy returned to the CMC Ascot scene tonigh t after a short layoff. Seems like he got caught with ,his hand in the cookie jar. David's been riding a pair.of Ossas, one in the 250 class and one that's supposedly an over-bored jobber legal in the Open class. Well, he broke his "big" Ossa at Lions two weeks ago, and decided to ride the stock 250 in the Open c1i'ss. Stu Peters said that's a no-no, David, and disqualified him in the Open class. David took a short vacation, coming back tonight to win the 250 and Open class, as has been his h-abit of late. With all the motocross that went on, up un til yesterday, and with the big show coming up Saturday nigh t, a lot of riders must be ou t of money from the long weekend, and getting their scoots prepared for Saturday nigh t. Anyway, the vast majority of the CMC's "name" hotshoes were conspicuous by their absence. One class that had a pretty good turnout was the 125 Expert. Ray Lopez fought three moto duels with Chuck Bower and Bruce Baron. Ray held all the cards over the field, regulating !,la.... er to second overall and Baron . third, making it a Buhaco, Husky finish . ... .
