TWO WEEKS A·T VALLEJO By James Brammer VALLEJO, CAL., June 23, 1972,Dave Dotson jumped into t!Je lead at the start of the 250 Final at Vallejo and held his lead throughout the Final for his first Expert Main Event win. He broke the ten-race winning streak by Larry Drew. . In second, behind Dotson, followed Kent Johnson who had won his heat race. Allen Yarrow followed Johnson while Jim Coats held Drew to a fifth place finish. The finalists were ·strung au t with Dotson getting and holding a comfortable lead. Dave's dad, Ron Dotson, also placed with a third in the Junior class on a 650 Triumph where Mike Kane won on a big Norton. Randy Booth gave winner Allen Yarrow a rough close-in action throughout the 650 Expert final as he hung on to the pace set by Yarrow. In the 100 Junior final, Dave Faria moved into the lead early.with Kevin Sinclair in second and Mike Faria · moving up from fifth. About midway, · Mike passed Sinclair into second spot and then the two brothers ran a close one-two to the checkered flag. In the 200 Novice final, Eugene' Doleini running second haa trouble holding off Dan Shirts trying to pass in the early laps. But Doleini pulled a sneaker on leader Larry Liebwitz during the last lap to go on for first place. John Prince and Bill Bisel battled for the 200 Junior final with Bisel leading to the checkered flag. In the 250 Junior final, the Guglielmetti-Williamson saga continued. John Guglielmetti held off Darrel . Williamson to win. Williamson passed Guglielmetti for second place in the _previous week's race. Chico Short Track _ By J. Noffsinger CHICO, CAL., June 24, 1972 - The sweet smell of success was achieved by Ron Sauer when he capped off a fine evening of racing by winning. the 250 Beginner Main, and then taking the big one· of the eve!)ing, the 250 Handicap Main. Ron," sJarting from the front row" simply buil t up a very sizeable lead, never bothered to look behind him, and coasted home the winner. The hot shoes from the back row did not break the first four places. One should also noLe that Ron's Yamaha led a parade of some three Bultacos across the finish line. Dick Turner made his presence felt as he took the Expert Main on his Triumph. He got his usual fast statt and simply held a five yard cushion the rest of the race. Dick does appear to be out of shape, and at this pain t of the season has extreme difficulty in passing. Once he works his problems out here, beware. The 200 final in the Handicap even t did not prove out as expected. On papcr-, it figured to be a battle between John Arseniak, Steve Dietz, and Gene Mendes. All three really go at it tooth and nail .. Jeff Damon took the lead on the first lap and then really ran away with it. Arseniak, Dietz, and Mendes were simply battling each other back in the pack and really were only swapping places among themselves. The little Suzuki of Bill Snodgrass' really put it to the Buls in the 100 class. In one event, the Scratch Main, Jim Chadwick had pushed to a sizeable lead, however, Bill gained by leaps and bounds down the straights, and on the final comer simply flew by Mr. Chadwick. Larry Herrin (Kaw) ma.de up for his loss in the Beginner Main (when his bike sputtered La a stop wiLh ignition problems aI\d a quarter lap lead) by putting it to the boys in the 100 Handicap Main. MOTOR RACING NETWORK TO BROADCAST LAGUNA SECA MOTORCYCLE CHAMPIONSHIP. By James Brammer VALLEJO, CAL., June 16, 1972 Larry Drew continued his win streak at Vallejo Friday night by winning both the 250 and 500-650 Expert finals. The 250 win extends his uninterrupted winning series to ten 250 finals on the tracks at Vallejo, Petaluma, and Santa Rosa. One upstart new to the Expert class, Dave D-otson, is threatening to win and he finished second to Drew after a good chase in the 250 final. In the big bike race, Drew won on a 500 BSA taking the lead early from Jim Saitone. A young Junior, Darrell Williamson, sponsored by R&J l:Ionda in Vallejo, is putting a new 250 Honda thumper into the winner's circle moving up from· fourth to finish second behind Ossa mounted Wes Cooke in the 250 Junior final. . . More violent is the 250 Novice class where, in the final, Phil Frank and J ames Rambo raced for the lead after RUrss Paden fell off. Rambo held on to the lead while Frank stayed in close. Larry Beaty and Ted Kennedy wanted the 125 Junior final with Ted Kennedy getting the chec.kered-f1ag first after a long battle to pass Beaty. Running second to winner Larry Liebwitz, Richard Gaddy fell off in the 200 Novice parade on the last 'lap placing Dan Shirts in second. VAN LIENDEN RULES NIGHT TRACKS By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., June 23; HAYWARD, CAL., June 24, 1972 VanLienden and his Selby Mike Montesa terrorized the San Francisco nigh t tracks with a double win at Fremont Friday nigh t and one-three finishes Saturday night.. In his quest for· the number one plate, he added 11 points to his total. Friday night's first win for VanLienden came in the 500 Expert, which he leads by a ton.. The Selby Motors Montesa has been really cooking. this year and it should rocketship him to a coupre of well deserved high point trophies. The 250 Expert win was a gratifying one with the addition of six points in this class. He is now firmly ensconced in second place, 10 pain ts behind Jerry Kale who finished second. Kale has been having his troubles lately but his 0& D Cycle Bultaco has performed well. The other guy to worry about, and my pick for next· year's number one, is Bruce Hanlon. He recently turned Expert and is fast becoming the rookie · to beat. He was third Friday night after a rotten start and ran away in the 250 Expert Main Saturday at Hayward. Corning up with double wins for the 650 Novice :Throw Contest: W\'ilo is the thrower and who is the throwee? two nights' racing were John Lupo in the 125 Jr. Main at Fremont and combined Junior and Expert Main at Hayward. Lupo is just about ready for Expert. Another ·double winner was John Tavis, Jr. At Fremont, father JJ and I had decided that if he got another second, he had four in a row, that we would call him the second place kid, but perhaps he knew what we were up to as he motored by the troops for very decisive wins in both nights' efforts_ His only real competition has come from Dave Murrell who was quite . surprised to see the' Honda get by, especially since he was riding one of his dad's new 350 Bultacos. Doing the double win in the 350 Junior was Daryl Musto on a Sonny Kenyon 350 Bultaco. Barreling his way to a double win was Roger Bolden on his Chaves BSA in the 650 Novice class. Dave Nazzisi won yet another set of 200 Novice Mains and he just has to be ready to tum. His flashy Kenyon mount has wiped up this class for the past three weeks. Coming up to the line for the 650 Junior Main at Hayward was really stylish for Adam Sabedra. He had the pole all staked out and as he rolled up to the line, he merely shook his head that he was. ready and dumped the clutch. The starter must have agreed with him for the flag waved and Adam was long gone. The 650 Expert looked like another weekend for Bill Landsborough and the Selby BSA. The start was a hot one and Bill came out the best with Dan Hughes and Jack Bonamarte doing the chasing. On the last two laps, Bill experienced carburetor troubles. Exiting the back tum before the jump on the last lap, he saw one carb disin tegrate and one Triumph go on for the win. Starting in July, the Hayward M.C. and the AU-American M.C. will al.ternate Saturday nights while alternate Friday nights will also be run at Fremont. Confused parties p lease check the calendar.
