UP - Indian Dunes , HE WILL BE BEATEN Weinert and the Jones boys, big guns for Yamaha~l""'. and the U.S. conditioned to the rigors of night motocross, but the unproven new 250 Kawasaki protos may be down on the horses. That's where Cary J ones comes into the picture. After being the [U'st American to totally crush the Europeans in an AMA-FIM function two weeks ago, the Yamaha's power 'becomes obvious, especially in the starts. But, all five riders have potent starts and because of this, Joel Robert's chances are cut in half, as he is seldom off the line first. Trickery is more difficult on the tigh t nigh t courses and Joel may not find time enough in 30 minu tes to creep through the pack as he so often enjoys doing with great success. Sylvain Ceboers, then, can be selected as a slightly better choice in Europe's hopes for an overall. But, whatever it comes down to, the face-off is not going to be a European runaway. In fact, don't say we didn't tell ya if it turns out to be an American runaway. Now wouldn't that blow a few minds over there on the Con tinen t? DiffBrake Sport: MOTOCROSS Place: L.A. COLISEUM MX-----~ By John Crout VALENCIA, CAL., July 2, 1972 Indicative of the super-talent racers which are being i'ieveloped within the old reservation, still another name has been added to those riders now considered among the finest in local competi Lion. Bob Steph,,!!, a snorter, riding a Bultaco tuned by Steve's today took bis first ride against a large, swift field of 250cc Senior/Experts at the Dunes. He made tbe gigantic step from Junior-ranked slider into the Senior ranks without a hitch. Young Stephan, who had taken the 1972 points lead for Jun~ors at the Dunes found himself face-to-face with the "big gang" this Sunday, and he rode all three motos, scoring a 3-1-2 tally. There were 396 cyclists present for today's racing program at the Dunes; however, only 25 of that number were competing in Stephan's division but it was a Geld possessing more than a modicum of rapid riders. Runners-lip behind Stephan for the day's overall win were Joehnck, David, Egizi ane! Taki. Joe Cushaway, CZ thrasher from the Ventura area, rebounded from his defeat of last week - which was dished-out by the "Howlin' Hawaiian," Jim Snow - and came roaring right back for an Open Expert victory, while snapping his own track record for one lap with a 1 :48.20. Finishers behind Cushaway for the day's overall honors, included Jim Mercier (Mai), Doug Weis, Rod Kershaw (CZ), Terry Bilton (Mai), who had won the first heat race for the group, but who was forced to cancel his later engagemen ts with bottom-end problems. Bul taco rider Jack Keese repulsed a talent-loaded field of 125cc Experts, while gaining his particular division's overall win against runners-up Joe Cardilino, on a Puc;h for Cycle Products Unlimited; Paul Allum (Pen), Ron Bass, who was doing his racing on a Puch borrowed from Enduro Enterprises; and Dan Blalock (Mon). Winners among a large group of Old Timers were Bob Pierce (Ex), Brian Fabre (Am) and Ceorge Alahozos (Nov). Both Pierce and Fabre were racing Maicos to their second straigh t overall in a two-week period. $250,000 Parts Inventory At Your Service $21.95 BEST PRICES - Riders: 250 INTERNATIONAL Question: THE TRACK By John Huetter Let your imagination go. Imagine you have the floor of the Los Angeles Coliseum and $40,000 to build the motocross track you have always wanted. Well, maybe you wouldn't have picked the Coliseum to do it, unless you wanted to have room for a 100,000 people to see the motos. Leisuretech, who are promoting and producing the night Inter-AMA on July eighth have that option and the 40K to do it. The track is definitely not going to be another of the too common adobe·based TT courses that are passed off as motocross to a lot of locals. The main plus to the Coliseum track is the tremendous variety of track surfaces that are being implemented. The big minus is the inevitable lack of great elevation differences', although six foot jumps are being built at the end of two fourth gear straigh ts. . The course surface varies, including grass, ~and, dirt, mud, and water on gravel. This should favor the Europeans. But the track will be tigh t and twisting with a lot of ruts and whoop-de-doos and maybe one or two good lines through the comers. This will definitely favor the Americans. There is a long fourth or fifth gear start straight feeding into a high·bermed comer that is almost a 180 degree switchback. A good start in the 20·minute International motos will be all important. The riders that have been regulars in night motocross at Lions, Ascot and Corona know about hole sbots. Robert and Ceboers are seldom the first off the line, though Ceboers is better in this respect. Plus, Americans have experience in running under the Iigh ts. How do you gear for a track like this? You need the speed at the start and over the jumps, but the rest of the track is first, second and maybe a little third gear stuff. The front row seats come right down to the berms at each end of the Coliseum turf. There win' be hay bales, but come prepared to get sprayed. I think the track is going to be a lot faster than it may look. The action will definitely be in the comers, many of which are stacked right on top of each other, with relatively high berms. The track is complex 'and varied. It is definitely going to be more interesting and better prepared than the last night In ter·AMA track. For one thing; more time an.d money are going in to the preparation and it's a fresh track; never been run on before. _ It looks great to the eye. The only question is if the track will hold up under six motos by national and international riders. It's hard to prepare a surface to hold together' and keep its in tended shape with the power being generate.d and dirt being displaced by 30 and 45 HP machinery, moun ted by riders who know how to use every cubic centimeter of It. If the track holds up, it is going to be one spectacular motocross and you won't even have to get your feet dirty to watch it. Super Joe Einhorn is out of the hospital after his spectacular get-off at Cal-Expo in Sacramen to and plans to jump the track or 14 cars, whichever comes first. He has also put up a $50,000 challenge to be matched by anyone who can outjump him in the Coliseum. A little show biz for halftime. Wonder what the Europeans will think of all that? Or the Americans, for that matter. Same Day Servicl!"' Send $1 for complete accessory catalogue & American flag. Japanese flag & Yamaha decals ~ ~~YAMAHA Van Nuys Cycle Inc., Dept.
