,CONVERSATIONS ON A LAWN • Part 2 ..~ o <>. N .... '" > "3 -. ~ W Z W ..J U > U By Ron Schneiders AFTER THE 'BAD ROCK TRIAL -' . CN: You know that long ridge you rode up on the power line up there? I was here ahout two months ago. Leon Wilbanks was showing me some of the country here. He was riding about a quarter mile ahead of me and when he passed and then there was a herd of ahout 50 elk had just charged over one of those ridges. . Eames: Elk? ' CN: Yes, elk. e: Vincent:, The only four-legged animals I saw up there besides deer were cows. -Hey, was it you that spooked the cows, Davey, and they ran out right in front of you? Vincent: They were just bouncing around having a good old time. A bunch of them did run in front of me, but they didn't really get too bad,. Only one of them. On a dirt road there was a cow that stood right there facing you. Did not move. I came within about three feet of it. She had her feet planted ... Latham: Who was it that ran into a cow about three years ago in the Berkshire? Was it Marcia (McDonald)? Eames: Marcia ran in to a cow up at Maine. Eames: A lot of the farmers in this back country really seemed to be enjoying us going by. In fact I even saw some people out there and they clapped as we came by! I've never seen that before. BIKE BACK BAG California Com~ition Guide relations up here. That's the whole secret of running one of these event'S: to have good public relations. CN: They haven't got many riders up here yet. A motorcycle's still a novelty. Latham: Yeah, it was sort of funny. Yesterday we came up on the course marker and he looks like he just got set down in Oregon straight out of England. He was on one of these little trials bikes and he had his black leather whatchamacallit hat. He was standing way up there on the pegs and pu tting along just like an English Trials rider. Marking the course. Latham: That's why it was a good thing they ran the easy schedule. They won't get many complaints cause people appreciate what they did. But there would have been some hard feelings if people lost their golds because of poor marking. It would have been very easy to do that if the schedule had been tigh t. I'd say I was lost during the two days for half an hour. Vincent: The marking is the whole name of the balJ game. Over in England they took a whole bunch of these stakes and drove them in the ground, you know, with red paint on the top of them. There must have been a million stakes over there. They did a beautiful job marking the course. There's no way you could get lost. CN: Yeah, I rode some sections of the Berkshire when I was there, and that marking was terrific. There's a science to doing it that we haven't got out here. Lath'am: When AI Eames marks the Program 148 Pages find your hero.
