Rocky.' Mtn. Trials Assn. Report >~ ~ w Z W ...J U ~ U Unfortunately we have had land problems that have hit our major event~ hard. The "Great Victor Trial" has gone down the tubes, although it may not be permanent. The "Ute Cup" Trial area has been hasseled over to the point that we have given up for the time being. At Victor, the land owners are paying more attention now that the price of gold is swinging up. The major land holder balked at giving permission for fear of liability. The "Ute" area is in a roadless area that could go in to wilderness. / So, the revised plan is this: On July 22nd and 23rd there will be an event at Rock Canyon which is just south of Colorado Springs. This canyon has been our pride and joy since it is the best Trials area we have. It is a forested canyon with fifty to two hundred foot cliffs. There is a commercial camp at the mou th of the canyon for overnigh t camping. The RMTA will foot the bill, all you have to do is register. In the canyon, Saturday night, there will be a chuck wagon dinner with live entertainment. Sunday the Trial will be for Semi-Experts (amateur), Expert and Master riders. In the afternoon the Expert and Master classes will continue their contest on a course that goes farther up the canyon over very rugged natural terrain previously not used. We feel this will be a fitting substitute for Victor. If you can make this event please write so we will know what to expect. The "Ute Cup" has been moved to the southeast slopes of Pikes Peale We have never used this area for Trials, although it is presently open for Trail riding. The event is slated for the Labor Day weekend and will be a two day, cross CQun try even t. The area is very beautiful and elevations will range from nine to eleven thousand feet. In the past, the Ute was· only open to the Semi-Experts and up. This year may see it open to the novice class, the powder puff, junior and enduro classes will definitely not be included. . There will be regular one day even ts on the fourth Sundays of August and September held in mountain settings. Presen t plans are for an Expert-Master event of a rugged nature to be held July 30th which will feature Rob ,Edwards. Rob is the number two Montesa factory rider. This even t will be good for spectators and will be near Denver. This will be a good tie-in with the Rock Creek Canyon event for those that will be on vacation. On carburetion, bring the next two jet sizes smaller on both the main and pilot jets if you are using a Spanish Amal. By Janet West HOUSTON, TEX., June 25, 1972 Jake King had the dust situation under control Sunday with two water trucks continuously watering the track, keeping both riders and spectators happy! Ronnie Dement came down and showed the Houston boys how to ride the .125 Expert class - and he did it on a Honda! Jerry Friedrichs, on a CZ, gave Dement an excellent run for his money, especially in the first heat. David Faulkner (Hon) managed a third overall, and Tracel Parker (Pen) a fourth. Arlin Inglebretson was wired to his Husky Sunday, and did some fine riding to ge t a firs t place overall. On a borrowed CZ, Bryon Fox did extremely well, keeping up his usual riding image by going like crazy. I must make a public apology to Bryon also - at the last Nacogdoches race it seems he did -_._-----------Kawasaki Superbike International: July 21,22, 23. Bill Greene did some fancy stuff, and came in fOT a fourth overall - broken collarbone and all! He fought off Bill Urquhart (CZ) as long as he could, but Urquhart finally made it around him to take third overall. Open Expert was taken by fast Tommy Denning (CZ). Tommy had his job cut out for him, trying to stave off Gary Jackson, also on a CZ. Hanging in there like always was good ole U Fanner" Richard Crain. Hot Sprockets By Carol Witt Photos by Art Patrick WICHITA, KANS., June 25, 1972 Hot-hot-hot...that is tl)e only way to describe the regular bi-weekly race here at Sprockets Mota Club. Weather, as weU as track time, tested the endurance of the 131 riders who turned out for today's events. Oklahoma was weU represented by 14 entrants as far South as Norman_ In fact, the rider from Norman took first in the 125 Senior class on his CZ. First race of the day was the 125 Junior class. Two Yates Center boys took trophies home today, first going to Albert Halfmann and second going to Lid McCormick. Third place went to 13 year old Matt Richard (Mai). Matt was the youngest rider on the track today, and he showed qualities that makes for a very good rider as well as a good person. Matt was in eighth place in the first moto, and came back in the second moto to a third place, and a fifth in the third. The 125 Senior moto was won by Norman Heinicke of Norman, Oklahoma (CZ). He would have had a perfect score except for the last lap in the fust moto when he had a flat tire. Marvin Whitman, riding his Yamaha, took over first, leaving Norman second. In the second and third motos, Norman took both firsts. Whitman who stayed right in there for the seconds even though he rode with bent shocks the last moto. The Senior 25 Os and Sportsman classes were run together but scored separately. There was a pitched battle in the Sportsman class between Ken Peoples (Suz) and Jim Cone. Cone took the first moto, but Peoples rode hard and took first for the last two motos. Cone came in third and fourth. 125 JR Albert Halfmann Lid McCormick Matt Richard Jerry Sinard Michael Bruce 125SR Norman Heinicke Marvin W~tham David Dixon Eddie Morgan Jay Ounlap 250 SPORTSMAN Ken Peoples Jim Cone W.G.
