ORANGE, CAL., June 18, 1972 Local hillclimbers had their work cut
out for them today as seven of San
Jose's best spent Father's Day at
Saddleback Park's Mallerhom.
Neal Mackel (King of the Matterhorn)
was temporary dethroned today by
Steve
Picatti
of
the
Campbell
Motorcycle Club of San jose. Mackel,
who has taken overall honors the last
five mon ths in a row, could do no beller
than winning his class today as Picatu
cleaned the hill on every attempt for a
well deserved first overall.
Doug Hall (Bul) was given a special
award by Vic Wilson today for his
outstanding performance in the 250
class. Doug has won the 250 division
more times then any other rider with his
specially prepared Bullaco.
One of the toughest classes of the day
was the 400 division. Ed Shaver (Kaw)
again took tOP honors, but Maico riders
George Murai and Kerry Peterson also
cleared the hill several times today with
Shaver taking the win on fewer misses.
There were several individual efforts
that seem worth men tioning today. Wes
Evans (Bul) took the 125 class getting
higher on the 650' Matterhorn on his 125 then anyone else has for months,
also the 1000cc Harley of Bill Harrison
of San Jose. Harrison cleared the hill
several times on his big H·D for first in
the 1000 class.
Even the girls were ou t giving the
Matterhorn a try today. Alice Hundley
(Vam) got the highest mark at about
500' and, according to Vic Wilson, at
the next event he will have a special
class for women only. So if you girls
would like a chance at the next
hillclimb (Oct. 29), give Vic a call at
Saddleback and let him know. _
As usual, the hill was in perfect
condition, in fact it was a little easier
than most climbs, with 25 riders making
it over the top for one of the best
hillclimbs of the year.
