Still astride the motorcycle, propped up by two friends, he called for the microphone and introduced Bob Ward. Three Cadillacs and four vans waited between the ramps. Back on his stretcher, Knievel whispered to Ward, "Start out with these seven, and if you want to jump 11, go ahead. "Don't worry abou t going too fast or too slow. Just be in third gear. As you make your test runs, I'll be righ there letting you know if you're going fast enough." Ward, a native of Buffalo, N.Y. now making his home in Atlanta, nodded his head, climbed on his cycle and soared with ease over the seven. His right hand flew from the bar upon landing and Evel noted this. "I think you ough t to leave well enough alone," Knievel whispered in Ward's ear. "Forget any more jumps today:' "You're the boss," replied Ward, who had wanted to jump all 13 cars as Evel would have. "I'd like him to join me in my act," Knievel told a reporter as he was· being wheeled back into the ambulance. "If any promoter ever needs a recommendation for the kid, he can write to me in Butte, Montana. Just 'Evel Knievel, Butte, Montana!" So Wicked Ward, the kid who was trying to make it alone, received the biggest boost of his life. "This man is the best; he's Number One. What can I say?" Ward choked with' emotion. "What bigger honor can that man pay me?" Knievel paid Ward $2,500 for his appearance. "My longest of about 15 jumps. was 151'. cars in Buffalo," said Ward. "I spent four months in the hospital after that with broken ribs, wrist, shoulder and leg." Ward is scheduled to jump 20 Honda cars at another Atlanta race track the following week. Knievel, after being fitted with a back brace, said he would attempt to jump seven vehicles at Oklahoma City on the same date. Ward, who, like Knievel, operates without a manager, can be reached at 1737 McLendon Ave. N.E., Atlanta 3037. He has been handed the keys to the kingdom by the King of Stuntmen. But, this won't happen unless AB 151 is approved. And no matter how good of an idea we think it is, it won't be approved unless we tell our elected representatives that we want it approved_ Don't wait for someone else to do it. OFF·ROAD VEHICLE REGISTRATION GETS UNDER WAY A special ceremony on the Capitol steps on June 13, marked the start of California's new off-road vehicle registration. and licensing program. The program which becomes effective July I, 1972, provides user-funds for acquisition and maintenance of statewide mechanical parks and trail networks for off.road vehicles. Attending the ceremony were Assemblyman Eugene A. Chappie who carried the legislation on behalf of the off-road vehicle enthusiasts, Robert H. Meyer, Deputy Director of State Parks and Recreation, which will administer the facilities program, and Robert C. Cozens, Director of the Department of Motor Vehicles. Highlighting the ceremony, DMV Registrar John McLaughlin issued the first off-road vehicle license to Russ Sanford, MORE prexy and lobbyist. The registration and licensing program requires that all off-road vehicles must be registered and licensed prior to use of the public lands, unless such use is while participating in sanctioned even ts. Vehicles which are registered and licensed for use on stree ts and highwilYs are exempt from the ORV registration program.
