The long 30-mii1utc motos told on almost aD the Expert riders, as they had on the juniors. Control got sloppier and near getoffs more frequen t as the minutes wore on in Moto Two. The ruggedness of the course was also a revelation to many Southern California riders more used to the glorified scrambles tracks used for MX. In the second moto for the middleweights, Greg Robertson once again built up a substantial lead, pursued by Terry Clark (Hus) who was riding two classes back to back, and jeff Wecker (CZ). Marty Tripes emerged from the pack for the fJrst time during the day. With two laps to go, the order got an abrupt shuffling when Clark broke a chain and was out, and Robertson lost his front number plate. Tripes was in the lead. Marty started motoring around almost effortlessly, while Robertson rode one-handed, holding his number plate in front of the bars with his left hand. He ran second, then third, finally dropping back to fourth. It's hard to be competitive, using only one hand. This unsettled the 2511 overall prospects for Robertson. Hershey and Silverthorne wasted no time getting righ t down. to it in the second 500 leg. The two ran away from. the rest of the pack and were several hundred yards ahead when Hershey went around Bill S. Ri t at !he end, Bryar Holcomb (Suz) bumped Silverthorne out of second spot. Moto Three jeff Wright leaped into a comfortable lead on the restart of the 125 final go and started the usual stretching it ouL / Ho-hum, see if there's anything left in the cooler. There goes jeff winging it past the mudhole and...wow, he missed a shift, the engine must have turned 10 grand. But it wasn't a missed shift by young Wright, the chain had parted and he was, disgustedly, out of it. The Clark and Cannady show got underway in jeff's absence and Jo-oked pretty good. Then, with about three laps to go, poor Gene got hit' with another bad blow. His left sh ock Ie t go and he dropped steadily back. The Mid-Valley crew took off in the final moto' as Robertson and Ron DeSoto settled down to a 1-2 for the final. Surprise! Marty Tripes came from about twentieth or so to pass Robertson abou t lap five. Robertson seemed to be going just as fast as before, but Tripes was going faster. Tripes won it; Robertson second with the right number of points for the overall. Second overall in the 250 was nobody you've read about so far. That's because you've got to be around at the fmish to make it in motocross. Gabe Dick (CZ), from Reno, overcame years of bad luck and breaking bikes at Mammoth to run second, third, fourth and elsewhere in the top six during each of the three motos. Ex tremely good show for a D-36 Amateur. The fmal leg looked like a replay of the Silverthorne-Hershey me first, you first dirt-spraying and berm-moving contest. Silverthorne held off Hershey for lap afte! lap bu t Hershey just wore away at the lead, sneaking past about the halfway poinL But another sleeper woke up and decided to go racing. Bruce Torbett (Hus) moved righ t up on Silverthorne and succeeded in passing him in one lap. On the next lap, Tprbett passed Hershey and started running away. This boy had to be in some kind of tremendous shape to do this at four in the afternoon. At the fmish, it was Torbett, Hershey, and Holcomb.
