Wood's d ogged persist en ce paid off when Brede's Maico went down and he sp rin ted into the lead. The see-saw dicing went o n with Lyle Moody on h is Husqvarna jumping into the top three actio n and pushing stea dily on Sonida, he held on for sec ond pl ace. Some of th e st ro ngest duels seen th is y ear w ere settled in th e 100cc a nd 250cc Jr. clas s. T he 100cc class saw th e top three riders loc k h orns for th e first ti me th is seaso n : Bob Stem and Joh n A twood o n Hoda kas and Dale Walter (DKW) . Stem and Atwood were consisten tty running in th e top three in all th ree 20 -minute motos, fin ishing o ne -two fo r th e da y . Mech an ical problems held Walt ers far b ack in the p ack in th e first m o to . But n ot to b e sh u t out for th e day . Walters b ounced b ack with first pla ces in the next t wo m o tes , good enough for third overall. T h e 2 50 J r. class saw so me fantastic rid ing out o f two AJS ride rs. Ken Hirch ert and Mar von Braum, and CZ rider Rich ard Grafton. The first moto sa w Braum take the lead , never to loo k back. In the meantime, Hirchert had his wo rk cu t o u t for him as he was inv olved in a pil e-up in th e first tum , th at p ut him nearly a hal f lap b eh ind th e pac k of so me 35 riders . At th e end of 20 minutes, Hir ch er t h ad sa lvaged th e moto with a seve n th , wi th Gr a ft on running eleventh. The ne x t mo to caugh t Bruam st ill in the pits mak in g adj us t men ts at th e drop of the flag. Meanwhile , Grafton was out in front and running strong. At the checkered flag Hirchert h ad taken third with Gr afton first. Going in to the fin al m oto: o nly two p oints separa te d Hirchert and Gra ft on. Grafton ch arge d in to first pla ce with Hirchert h ot on his h eels. Braum, who only managed to ove r ta ke a fe w riders in the sec o nd moto , was in fifth - and coming on st ro ng. By th e third lap Braum had taken th e lead for go od , which gave him a third for the d ay with Hir chert taking home first pla ce h onors with hi s c o nsisten t riding. Gr afton took a well-deserved second. The 250 Sr. class saw a no th er pair o f AJ S riders. David Bo ydst un and Morris Malone b attle it o u t with Bruce McDougal (Yam).
