M Tripes Has Laugher at Carlsbad second in th~!roO Junior and a third in the 250 Junior class. Intermediate class winners were Larry Aumock, Mark Lickert, and Bryan Porter. Aumock beat out Reed Mayne and D. Martin in the 500 class, Lickert beat Greg Parker and Dave Carlson in the 250 class, and Porter won over Bruce Wygal and Mark Parker o'f the 125 's. Many Expert riders were elsewhere this Sunday and the tempo was slowed as a result. Bryan Lendl, CMC stalwart is nursing a purple bruise which is valiantly trymg to cover his stomach. Lendl went over the handlebars a week ago but didn't completely make it. Lendl's friends wish him a speedy recovery. Werner Schutz is on the injured list with a wobby ankle. Schutz and Lendl were recently observed palling around together, Schutz presurruibly trading riding .tips for fragements of correct English. The West German's English is picking up by leaps and bounds. DE SOTO PLA YS ,A T LIO'NS By Eric Raits WILMINGTON, CAL., Dec. 10,1971 John DeSoto scorched the 500 Expert class Friday night at Lion's motocross offering. DeSoto seemed to be hardly trying as he won three motos ahead of Bill Payne and Rick Brown. Payne, Brown and the other Experts were allover the track, obviously trying, but they couldn't do anything aginst the disdainful riding of DeSoto. Barring breakdowns, DeSoto served notice it might be a long, cold winter for the other 500 Expert classers. Joe Johnston, 14:year-old Comp ton, Calif., rider whipped up the stands when he won the first 250 Expert moto ahead of Bob Messer. Johnston was making his debut as an Expert and quickly became the crowd favorite as he held off the more experienced riders and won the second moto also. The Cinderella story fell apart in the last moto however. Messer had two seconds and only an unforseen atrocious finish by Johnston would rob young Joe of the win. The glass slipper broke on the starting line before the third race as Johnston neglected to turn on his gas taps and ran out in the first corner. Messer won after early leader Doug Sherman took a nasty over-the-handlebar grunter and Johnston finished well back after falling again trying to make up much lost ground. The win went to Messer, Johnston was second and Bill Rubly took third. The 125 Experts started the evening with a promise of last moto heroics as Jeff Wright and Bill Payne each had a win in the first two races. A dead engine start in the last moto saw Larry Watkins shoot oUt in the lead, followed by Payne. Wright was well back in the crowd and then was forced out by a throttle sticking wide open. Jeff rode the last lap using the kill button to earn second place ahead of Ken Zahrt. Wright's throttle stuck once in practice and then came unstuck too soon for the cause to be found, refusing to bind up again until the deciding moto. Bill Payne's performances the last two weeks have been on a Penton, instead of a Puch as we erroneously reported. D. Kolbe had a good night in the 125 Jr. class, winning both heats and the fmal by a wide margin. Mike Sixbery won the 250 Junior class after spending most of the final in third place. He pushed the second place rider until he made a mistake, got by him and then passed Charles Leeper at the checkered flag. David Bakkedahl needs to study the CMC rulebook. Bakkedahl ignored two warning flags as an injured rider lay on the track and took advantage of the other riders slowing to move up from an approximately meaningless tenth to an equally meaningless ninth position. Jerry Hill used a lot of desert riding experience to enter his second motocross and win the 100 Junior class on a course which has been greatly improved from last week. The horrendous sand pit has been eliminated and several portions of the course have been widened.
