Robert rode his hardest moto but at th e end of 30 minutes co uld only pass Roberton for third, second overall. After a strong first moto, Weil succumbed to Geboers in the secon d . In the final moto, he looked very much o ff pa ce in ninth but still earned fourth overall. Bickers, the jolly Englishman, was haggard at the end of this series and it was beginning to show the last few races. But DeCoster did; is nothing sacred? The third rnoto offered a showdown between the two world cham p io ns, the winner taking the overall. Geboers took the lead with Husky's Andy Roberton gathering good ground. Righ t behind, DeCoster egged him so much he nearly forced Roberton around leader Geboers on a pass attempt. Meanwhile, Robert suffered an energetically as he rode the Carlsbad Grand Prix last September. Although the first three or fo ur places of each mo to led the blance of the field by ha lf a minute, he battled the rest of the Europeans and fast Americans all day and emerged victorious in fifth position. A fitting tribute to the series' most colorful rider. The battle fo r top American of th e series was a grueling one. Brad Lackey an d Mark Blackwell b o th finished highest American four times each in the previous 1 1 races .
