Theroux Nearly Cleans Up Indoors By Bill Sp encer SA N JOSE , CAL., Nov. 20, 197 1 Nic k Th er oux almost cleane d hous e in tonight's third running of th e San J ose indoor rio ts o n a very well se t up Comoroto Honda. Theroux, a surprise a t th e J ul y San Jose Natio na l, se t second fast time in th e h eats behind point lead er Greg Hodges, wo n the S em i with fast time and won th e Main with a one sec ond lead. T h e only thing h e missed out on was the troph y dash in Sio-Pokes. MX By Margaret Earnest SANTA MARIA, CAL., Nov. 14, 1971 The Lompoc Slo-Pokes had something new an d different for th e . nearly 200 riders who showed up fo r the motocross today. The course had been reversed and it be came a whole new track. The turnout wa s expected to be light because of Hopetown runni ng th e same day but there was o ne o f the lar gest Open Senior classes ever, with 20 on th e line. Jim West on his Husky had troubles from the start an d retired for th e da y a fter running only one mota . Bob Bowers, Husky mounted, w ith t wo fir st and a sec ond t ook the first overall with Joe Cushaway fr om San ta Maria second . Th e small bikes usu ally h ave a hard time a t Spillway Park but today was differ ent ; t rac k c onditions fro m th e recent rain gave them go od traction a nd Victor Lee, on a Kawasa ki with th ree firsts, to ok h ome th e first p lace go ld . Th e 12 5 Seniors sh ow ed up with a few n ew faces but it was the same old dice gam e with these fellas with' only th eir number in creased. Dean York o n h is Bul put it to ' em for the ov erall win with Gerry Smalley settling for second. Th e second Div, of the 250 Jrs. saw a contest b etween Mik e b eautiful Beardsl ey , an experienced rider , and Dan a Batc h elo r, an in experie nced yo ung novic e on his first 250 race and with only tw o rides behind him. Dan a had tried it before on a Honda SL90 and went to a two stroke Suzuki in the 250 class and this was his first time out. Fifteen-ye ar-old Dana ma y hav e gotten h imself a first overall but a loose wire connection in the last mota threw him back to seventh and a third overall, not bad fo r a third race. The 250 Srs. saw a tigh t contest with Dennis Law, Sherman Schnellar and John Caldwell, with John riding his first Senior race . Ca ldwell led at the st art and went down in th e first comer and the lead switched to Law. Dennis suffer ed an injury a few months b ack and today was his first time back and looked great until m echanical failure retired him . J ohn d id a spectacular endo wh ich eliminated him the third time out so it was an ybody's ra ce. Schnellar got it all together with two firsts -an d a sec ond for the first place Win. This track today, partially due to the course reversal and more so due to the recent rains, 'was the best ever. Walt Axthelm wa~ quoted as saying the .Europeans would've just loved it . (Results on p age 24) wh ich Bob Scall y had screamed "kill" once agai n. Runnin g th e Main was n't to o di ff icult after th e guys got past th e first tum. It was o bvio us th at th e b attl e w ould be in th e .first ten fee t as AI Kenyon was right next to Theroux and Ken yon is one o f th e be st off the line riders in history . On the firs t star t, Nick got the right line and was set for the night until Del Silva and Dave Bostrom got in a tangle and the red went out. On the second start, Al go t hit going into th e number one tum and when the dust (?) settled, it was Silva and Bostrom on top of Kenyon with the red flag waving. This was en o ugh for Referee Masterson to start the ten riders in lin e and that was about all the action. Theroux got a good jump with Kenyon being hard pressed by John Brumond, Hodges an d Da ve Hansen. AI put the pressu re on Theroux for a short time but then dropped back an d Hodges thusl y turned up the wick. He got Brurnond, as d id Hansen , and just passed the halfway mark, both Hodges an d Ha nse n got Kenyon. Greg took off after Theroux, but h e was long go ne. He did manage to cu t the sizab le lead d own to just under a seco nd at the end, though. . On ce again , the su rp rise story was cen tered arou nd Bob Scall y. In the qualifying h eat, he cam e up with the fast time and set a n ew in door one lap re cord at 7 .84 eclipsing Bill Morgan 's 7.90 I. Then in th e h eat he lined up o n the p ole next to Jeff Hammond. At th e drop o f the green, th e two long an d lan ky riders proceeded to crash and bang eac h oth er righ t in to the first corn er, depositing Hammond for the night and puttin g Scall y b ack to fourth , eeking out a spot in the semi. His performan ce in th e semi was a great on e. From th e b ack row h e •tucked in behind Ron Wisler 's ancien t Ducati for a fifth spot an d a transfer to the Main. One might th ink ·th at th is would be alright but not Scally; he tried to get by on the inside on the se cond lap, but the four st ro ke Ducati is like a tank when you get off the gas. Wisler is a long time . veteran of these indoors and knows just how to ride, so Scally took to the' outside. On each lap he would pick up an ineh until ab o u t two laps fr om the end it looked lik e he mi ght just pull it off, but the slippery surface deceived h im an d he did a spinout the likes that would astonish anyone. He didn 't make it b ut h e got a good round of cheers from the thousand odd spectators. Scally is, without a d oubt, a spectacular rider to watch on the riots. While he didn 't make the Main, he had the pole for the trophy dash and brought his Sonny Ken yon racer in fo r the w in to make Bultaco a three time winner in th at department. Craig Filmer led ou t the 10·lap Co nso lat io n with Steve Hernandez and Jerry Baugh close in tow and had everyth ing in co n tro l until the last lap when Baugh made h is move an d took the lead draggin g Hernandez alo ng. Filmer, mechanic at the Ken yon racing en terprises , co uld o nl y shake h is head after th e rac e. It's O .K. Crai g, there's always next week.
