USRC TTIST By Buzz Baty EL TORO, CAL., Dec. 5, 1971 - It really wa s impossible to believe, when I left this track Friday night, it was a qu agmire . Now at noon Sunday it 's dry, hard and fast. Mike Myers and Scott Smith, the Golddust twin s of Riverside County, were o u t to try and pick up so me first place money. Mike did lo ok to have a hot hand, as he won the first 250 IT and ST events. At the start of the second 250 ST rac e, Mike got off th e line fast , but so d id the wh ole field, 14 riders in a cIose pack. It had to happen. Mike go t sideways in the first comer, ' Scott Smith co uld n ' t go hi gh or low, and so r ode straight into Myers. Davey Davis th en h it Smith hard with all three bikes ge t ti n g tangled in midair. Smith had th e worst of it, like b eing b etween .a r ock and a hard place , h is o wn m achin e, plus th e scoote r o f Davis, n ow lo cked t ogether , came down on Scott as he hit th e tr ack. Scott may have a broken sho ulde r but we wi ll have to wait for later word. Myers p acked up his busted Yamaha an d Scott 's, and calle d it a day. Davis came out of t he cras h with a bum right leg. But, as he said to his fat her when h e was back o n h is feet, " Hell , I d o n ' t need my right leg for short track," and Davey pro ceeded to rem ount, ri de, and p ick up first pl ace fo r th e d ay .
