This is the firs t of thc bi g-time off-ro ad races to offer a class for sportsmen rac ers , at least those unable t o freel y shell o u t two o r three hundred dollars fo r e n try . T he Motorcycle Sportsman Class will co st a m ere 525 to enter and trophies will b e han d ed out to the first 50 p er cen t finish ing. T hose who want to go for the bi g b uc ks ca n spend 250 to en ter the Master Class. The course will b e m a rked by J anuary 10 for pre-runs. The sections will be easy en o ugh that they can be "clea ned" on a stock 36 0 Yamaha and Mark Eggars h as volunteered to prove it , if so me one wi ll len d h im a b ike. Any section that ca n't be cleaned b y Mark o n the Yamaha won't b e allowed. I t 's also b een promised th at the traps will be safe. If yo u use just a reaso nab le amount of good sense you won't hurt your b ike o r you r b od. But it's goi ng to be a real tr ials, lai d o u t like one a nd ru n like one so be prep ared to do som e riding and work a bi t. To ad d a b it of spice (translation : lo w co me dy) to the d a y , th ere is going t o b e a Pr ess Class in th e morn ing and yo u will have a chance t o see th at so me press p eople like J ody Nicholas a nd Ton y Murphy reall y ca n rid e, jus t lik e they w ri te. Last year Bruce Brown showed up and this year there's a ru mor th a t a well kn own Indy rider is go ing t o attend. I unders tand that Pap a Wealey and Hap Spoons wan ted t o ride b ut h ad to give up th e ide a when they fo u nd there was n't a side h ack class . At the end of th e da y, aft er the p ress p eopl e and regu la r trials riders a nd t he beginners h a ve had a chance t o flo u nde r around in the tr aps, th ere will b e an exhibitio n ride b y th e Masters . H ere's so meth ing in ter estin g. If you , average J o e Blo w, want t o make lik e Eve l Knievel , ~ ro u can do it. Yo u can set up your ramp, tum on th e thro tt le, close your eye s a nd d o it . Yo u ca n ju m p just as far as th e p ow er of you r m otorc ycl e and yo ur courage will allo w . Same with track racing: learn the bik e, crack th e throttle a n d yo u to o will b e go in g sideways. A nd we've all pl ayed road racer and mo to crosser. All these fo nn of the sport you can d o . Yo u m igh t n o t survive some to them and you will cert ain ly be less t han e1egan t in so me of th e oth ers but yo u can do it ; y o u ca n get ar ound the course , go through th e m o ti o ns. But y ou, average Joe Bo w , ca n ' t ma ke y o u r motorc ycl e or a n y motorcycle go through th e traps th at yo u will see th ese Masters go thro ugh. No t any machin e in a ny fas h io n . You will see these men do th in gs with their m otorcycles th at n on-trials riders simply can 't do at all, even badly. All I can d o is invite y ou to see for yourself and then try it. Among the Mas ters that y ou see in action on Sund ay a re R ic h Bleds loe an d Mark Eggars. Rick an d Mark are m o st probably th e two riders who will benefit fro m th is promo tion. They will go to Spain in th e spring a nd co m p et e in the Sp anish round o f th e European T ria ls Champio nship . R ich is 2 7 years o ld , ma rr ied an d has a little girl. He is curren t1y leading in th e ATA poin t race. Mark is in th e n um be r two spot. H e is 2 7, a h igh school st udent (an d good a t th at, t o o ) an d has b een riding trials a relativel y short tim e. He has a great d eal of t alent. Both are w ell b elo w E uropean cham p io nsh ip ca libe r at th is time but with som e ex posure to t ha t kind o f co mpet it io n, o ne of th em mi gh t well co mpete on eq ual terms so m e day.
