i Tr~jan's All-Star- Night :;; SOUTH GATE , CAL., Nov. 25, 19 7 1 It was a night for the real champions of ..- short-track IT racing to stand up and be u counted, because Scott Sm ith of Riverside, Bob Sanders of Whittier, and 111 Rick Goade of Fu llerton, stood 'way s above all others T hursday night as ~ Smith, aboard his Yamaha sponsored by w K & N, took over the lead from Goade cj on the eleventh lap and went on to win ~ the 50-lap 250cc IT Grand Prix at U Trojan Speedway. Smith, who was never ' worse t han third from the start, sped to a brilliant five-lengths margin over the field as he pursued the lead ers, Goade on his Bultaco, and Chris Sm ith and his Montesa sponsored by Kagay Cycle Sales. With o n ly three laps down, what first appeared as a royal three-way battle for the lead was quickly cut down to a two-way duel whe n a nut came lo ose on the primary sprocket of Chris Smith's m ach in e, forcing the hard-riding veteran out of contention. O n th e te nth lap , Goade's lead over the 18 -rider field was cut down from an ea rlier 12 second lead to five ove r Smith, John Carbone (Bul), Joe Brown (Bu l), Charles Gamm (Bul), and Mike Clarke. Sanders at this poin t was working his way from heavy traffic, but moving to challenge the lead ers. On the very next lap , Smith riding deep into the firs t corner, picked up three lengths and then caught Goade coming out of the second corner with a fancy high, and then low maneuver to grab t he lead as th ey headed towards the high jump . The 12 th lap saw third place Carbone pit with m echanical problems, while fourth p lace Brown tangled with fifth place Gamm. -G am rn restar ted and joined the field as Brown was seen headi n g for the pits, On the 15 th circuit, Smith held a six-second lead over Goade while Mike Clarke (B ul) and Sa nders w ho was rid in g Danny Corbett's a DISPLAY ADVERTISING DEADLINE AT PERR'S Boydstun, Huffman Transfer regular bike, a Bultaco, were battling for third. Goa de, experiencing handling problems w hen his compression release cable broke, was having difficulty slowing down for the corners and spilled on the 21st lap , but quickly recovered before losing his second p lace to Sanders who by this time had moved ahead fo r third over Clarke. At . the mid-way point, Smith increased his lead to eleven seconds ove r Goade, Sanders , Steve Hyder (Bul) , and Gamm, but as Goade and Sanders engaged themselves in a hot duel for second, the pair of champions cut Smith 's lead to only five seconds by the fortieth lap and were in the process of catching Smith. However, Goade still just barely managing to hold his machine up-righ t at the corners, spilled for the second time on the 41st lap ca using Sanders to slow as he m o ved into second, but in doing so, lost his bid to catch the lead er . Goade, as he did earlier, made a fast recovery and still held on to thi rd behind Sanders at the checkered.
