Rider and spectator interest, at least numerically, had steadily dwindled the last cold weeks of the season until 100 riders and 500 spectators were on hand for the Last few nightly shows. Bill Payne did his best to enliven the proceedings by winning a pair of Expert classes. Payne drew on two-thirds of his skill to whip Joe Scotland and Tom Cook in the no-contest 125 class. Payne and Werner Schutz tried to put some zip in to a 500 Expert and Intermediate race which consisted of them, Bryan Lendl, Clifford Bean, and the only Intermediate to make the starting line, Paul Mahnke. Bean added to the excitement by riding all night stuck in th ird gear. Payne beat Schutz two out of three. West German Schutz had the 250 class to himself. His two bad starts were probably intentional to give himself something to do so he wouldn't fall asleep. Mike Hortsmann rode steadily all night to beat Dave Pessey for second. CMC Friday night motocross moves to a new location, Lion's Drag Strip in Wilmington, for the winter season. (Results on page 20) Here's Macormic again but this time he's beating someone. It's hard to say if he's getting off or getting on.
