George wears the same big grin whether he finishes second overall or blows his transmission. If he gets frustrated and ill-tempered, nobody sees it. George has a reputation for being one of the nicest guys in the desert. "That's not true," George protests, "I'm a trashy devil." The Walker family thoroughly enjoys desert racing and all its attendarrt pleasures and theirs is usually one of the first campers to arrive at any race and one of the last to leave, in spite of the long drive from their horne in Santa Barbara. "Why me?" George asked when I said Cycle News wanted a story about him. "I'm no super-star. Go interview Thor (Rich Thorwaldson) or J.N. (Roberts)." George may not be the flashy rider that Rich Thorwaldson and J.N. Roberts are, but he is always in there, consistently finishing in the top ten. Mounted on a Kawasaki 360 Bighorn out of Power Research he is a formidable contender despite his protests to the contrary. As things stand now, George is going to be No.5 Desert Heavyweigh t when the season closes and that position is nothing to sn9ft at! try to stay awake.' HI like to be competitive," George explains, "but I don't like pain'. I want to get in there and go fast and finish well, but [don't want to break my bike; 1 want to race again nex..t week." George paused here and thought for a moment. "I don't wan t to break George, either." George gOt his first bike in 195.0 - a vertical twin Indian on which he used to crash around the hills near Santa Barbara. Perhaps learning to ride in the dirt on that bike is part of the reason the big 360 Kawasaki doesn't seem too heavy to George. George has raced just about every kind of motorcycle competition there is, and has done reasonably well at all of them. "I learn slow," George admits. "If the average guy can learn to ride desert in six months or a year, it takes me three years to [earn." George confesses that he watched friends race on a track near Santa Barbara for six months before he finally deCided he could do as well as they were doing and joined in. "The bike is about 99% important," George advised. "Not max horsepower, but dependability." Again he paused and thought. "I shouldn't have said that," he reflected. "['II probably break everything next week! The other 1% is mental condition." he continued. You finish really well one Sunday and everybody crowds around and cheers 'Good old George' and the next week they ask 'George who?" George says he is going to try to get a big race·face on for December 19. That is the last race of the season and if he breaks anything, including George, he will have about three weeks to make repairs. Take heed, Thor and J.N. That roar behind you on the 19 th may well be George Walker, gone sligh tly mad for once, trying to pass. "I rode one Hare and Hound where [ was out of rear brakes for the whole second loop and I was still going fast enough to finish fifth overall. That's dumb." George also remembers a time when he "usta' lay around and drink a lot of wine on Saturday nights. [ can't afford to give the kids that advantage anymore." .. George thinks that if he could get the proper mental condition he could probably finish even better than he does. "I've tried," he admits, "but I just can't get a race-strain on. I sit out there on the starting line and everybody else is all up·tight and jittery and I just can·t seem to get all worked up about it. I try to stay awake." "I know I can't outrunJ.N. or Thor," George added. "If th ey get 0 ff hard or have a real bad day I might be able to, but in a heads-up race I can't do it.
