The club used a new track for this event, and rider opinion was divided as to how they liked· it. The track is very demanding physically, being located in very hilly terrain and so rough that the rider can seldom sit down. That is the idea of the sport of motocross, though, and the majority of the A riders really enjoyed the new layout. A turnout of 92 riders allowed the club to give three long motos - 20 minutes for B rjders and 30 minutes for A. Even with the long races, the proficiency of the club resulted in the last moto ending at 5 :00. The first race off the line was the combined 125 A and B. Bruce Sass, the new No. I 125 A rider, was really flying around the course, but mechanical difficulties gave the win to Gary Chase. Both were on Yamahas. In the 125 B, after much juggling of positions, Mike Daddario (Yam) took the win, followed by Rick Kollenkark and Bob Sechler. . Two words describe the 250 A motos - Jim Wicks. He dialed his Maico into the lead at the first comer and spen t the rest of each race simply stretching that lead; and he did it all three times! This writer, wearing Mid-Valley CZ colors, finally broke a string of third places and too second behind Wicks. Terry Clouse (Hus) filled in the third spot. Doug Campbell has now been transferred to the A class, bu t in his final appearance as a B rider he won all three 250 B motos in fine style. Roger Oelkers was also a winner, taking home the gold in the 500 B class. U:)tLJ PARTS ..,--qO~-q~ All MAKES 40 to ~ ~~ SCRAMBLER 60 MOTORCYCLES off 1801 W. Burbank Blvd. qary Meyers was up to his old tricks and brougb t his Husky in for yet another win the 500 A class. Richard Jackson took second on a .CZ, and George Shaw (N o. 1 in the 500 class again this year) picked up third for Crossland Cycle. The Sand Hills M.C. is a ·new club, but with a lot of work they have made their track one of the best around in just a short time. Their club members are very helpful and efficient, and hope to improve the area even more. In keeping with the theme of "Run Silent, Run Wild", this club offers $10 to anyone who wins with a silencer. Four people collected this extra bonus today - Gary Meyers (Hus), Doug Campbell (Ric), Roger Oelkers (Hus), and young Mark Chase, winner of the mini·bike races. He was so far ahead of second place the dust had plenty of time to settle before the rest of the riders came around. The obvious battle was between Jake De Boe (CZ) and Robbie Esterlein (Husky). De Boe had to ride in order to maintain his second-place position; Esterlein was right behind him, ready to pick him off if one mistake should be made. The second moto of the 250 Experts was perhaps the most exciting race of the whole day. Esterlein powered his Husky off the line for a fantastic first place lead, only to get passed by Phil in the first tum. After getting around Esterlein, Snipes was gone, leaving De Boe to struggle for second again. Jake was working hard to get around Robbie, bu t couldn't seem to find the righ t moment to pass. This went on for five of six laps. Finally, after the white flag had been thrown, Jake managed to pass, grabbing another second on the checkered. By the time the other riders had pulled off the track, Phil already was drinking his Gatorade and cbatting. By the time the third heat rolled around all the 250 Expert riders were primed. Phil had first place sewn up, but there was lots of tension in the air between De Boe and Esterlein. Off the line first was Snipes, and again he was way ahead in only seconds, with De Boe again in second and holding his own; try as he migh t to catch Snipes, De Boe couldn't swing it. He was riding beautifully, bu t so was Snipes. By the time the checkered flag was thrown, it was the same old line up: Snipes, Esterlein, De Boe. Since Open bikes were scarce this weekend, both De Boe and Esterlein rode their 250 CZ and 250 Husqvama against the Snipes brothers, both on Open CZs. One couldn't want to meet any two people any nicer than Ken and Phil Snipes, but when they race, they mean business. The brothers took the top two places with Ken edging Jake for the second spot. 713 E sin SI,..I low. F.lls. low. SOU6 MOLLY BLUE D&S MOTORCYCLE CARRIERS fro. debuted at Ascot, 3332 Ret. 51., L.
