III and J.N.-- Officially a Legend .... '" ,..: u " o ~ w Z W ...J U >- U r Utah's Preston Gerber bench races with J.N. ne)(t to the Coors truck. runs to a ninth overall, first trailbike. As with any other gathering involving at least 10,000 humans, this year's run was not without problems. The most glaring deficiency concerned the gas checks, particularly the first one. The road was inadequate to handle the glut like 58 miles. Aha. With many prime contenders out walking for petrol, the rock-durable George Walker moved from 21st at the first check to third at the State Line. AfterMartino's unnamed mishap, Walker cruised his Kawasaki home second 20 minutes after Roberts and it was almost that long before the next man, Jim Sovie, came home. At the recent Check Chase Sovie took sixth overall, first Amateur but bettered himself today. Coming from eight at the of' vehicles. Traffic jams developed because vehicles got stuck in the sand and others were simply parked and abandoned. .At any rate, control was poor and it cost too man y people too much time. It seems logical to do things such as limit entries but that isn't fair. Perhaps a system of, say, twice as many stops with half as many riders per could be developed, and/or a pit pool system of riders who aren't affiliated with a club. Winds up to 40 mph at the start area also proved to be a bother. Heavy gusts started late Friday, rocking manifold vans and campers through the night and sending otherwise-hearty outdoorsmen scurrying for decent accommodations. The following morning the thousands of dust-shrouded pit vehicles pointed towards the freeway, silently waiting their turn to escape from this dust bowl. A most profound reminder of Oklahoma in the 30's, one can't help but think. (Results on page 20) . .~... A proud but tired quintuplicate of S.G.V.M.C. people who physically lifted the CN van out of belly deep sand at gas pit 1 where it had thrashed for over an hour. Thanks fellows. State Line, he passed Experts Wes Anderson, Jr., and Dick Breker, and fellow Amateur Ron Lambert for third overall. Localite Max Switzer poured on the coals for the last half of the race, moving from a so-so start. to pass all the fellows mentioned in the previous _paragraph, save Sovie, for a fourth. War broke out between Lambert and Breker in that last dash for the finish line. Running side-by-side, both spotted the banners that funneled down to a lane wide enough for one of them. Lambert was the one. First Lightweight Expert was Anderson at seventh overall followed by class rivals Phil Turgasel'\ and Pfutzenreuter. They were able to make the second gas stop while Pfutzeoreuter had to sprint a .mile [or his. Still, Larry closed up much of the !lap by the time the race finished. Mitch Mayes made another one of those amazing Harley·Davidson Baja . ."," - Don Ogilvie blew a tire but kept on going. Eventually the thing shredded off but Don still kept going. He took 35th overall, third trailbike. Grand old George Walker took second overall. ......
