M USRC MIers Show no Signs of Tu.rkey Day ,..: u o " ~ w Z W ...J U >- U By Buzz Baty EL TORO, CAL., Nov. 26, 1971 - This may have been the day after Thanksgiving, but 137 of the USRC 'crossers had their turkey well digested and were ready to get it on. The only class that was in short supply was the 500 Expert. Bruce Baron and Morris Malone were observed in civies, limping in unison and consoling each other about their injuries, and not being able to ride. Tore Jonsson also has a bum wheel according to pit rumor. The 250 and 500 1nt/Ex. were combined, with Greg ~mith on his big Maico winning all three motos with easey. David Boydstun has given up on his Maico. The Senior Boystun has purchased a 250 Ajay Stormer for David, and just to get the feel of things, and since Morris Malone is on a bum wheel, David' rode Malone's Ajay, wearing the Stormers Ltd. colors. Stormers Ltd. is the seller of Boydstun's new machine and will do the preparation for his new mount. (Results on page 20) OF 364, ONLY TWO SWEEP DUNES IX By John Grout VALENCIA, CAL., Nov. 28, 1971 Today's all·Junior, Old-Timer and Powder Puff program, which was held on the new Shadow Glen course at Indian Dunes Park drew an entry of 364 motocross racers. But only two of that number were able to collect a perfect, three-for-three win score. The two grand-slam winners were Matt Bilton, who grabbed three straight victories over the 125cc Novices in division "B", and Gary Dranow, who turned back the Open Novices in three straigh t sets. Bilton, DKW-mounted, gained his wins at the expense of Richard Kaeding RiC), Mike Waste (Pen), Allen Garrett Yam), and Randy Stubbs (Bul) while CZ-mounted Dranow conked an Open field which included such formidable foes as the Maico cyclone Glen Lane, Gary Martin (CZ), Bob Kane (Hus) and Russ Mortensen (Mai). In the motos for the Old-Timer brigade, Bob Mortensen shoved his yellow Maico down track-center to collect a 1-2-3 combo in beatin~ Mick McKee (CZ), J.L. Siebrandt (Gre), Don Withers (Hus) and Roger Dickens (CZ). Ed Poore was the big winner on his 200cc Bultaco for th ose Old-Timers riding the small bore class. Two riders on Harley Bajas, Bill White and:Jim Boone, exchanged swats at each other for the better part of the day in the motos for the 100cc Beginners, before White was finally able to emerge with the top brass. Bob Smith on a Rickman manal\ed to squeak past Mark Morrison (Hod) and Steve Pinneri, who was also straddling a Hodaka, for the day's overall victory over the 100 Novices. Suzuki riders James Coppel defeated 33 Junior racers in the three heats for l 125 Beginners. Some of the most exciting action was dished to the spectators during the contesting of the 152cc Novice, division "A" motos. In three events, Chris Mogensen, on a super-rocket of a Bultaco, found himself involved in heated dices for the lead with Tracy Oswell, a young rider on a s~nsation-of-a-Rickman. Mogensen, who currently holds the point lead for the Junior track championship, had to survive a protest and an official engine measurement, before he was finally entered into the books as the day's overall winner. Oswell was second while Gary Dranow (Suz) finished third. The two divisions for the 250cc Novices were won by Mike Keena (CZ) and Jim Hale (Bul). The Beginners divisions of the 250 and Open classes saw victories scored by E.rnie Hendrix (Hus) and Ben DelCampo, who was astride a swift Yamaha. Indian Dunes will again feature a full motocross program for Juniors, Old-Timers and Powder-Puffs on this Sunday. First race will ge the starting flag at 9:30 a.m. 1032 W.
