SOUTH GATE, CAL., Oct. 28, 1971
On a cold and windy night that found
only the hardiest afficionados of Tf and
flat track racing shivering under a mass
of cold air that sent temperatures down
to the 50's tonight at Trojan Speedway,
it was a simple story of tough racing
under unfavorable conditions.
The Trojan pre-race propaganda had
speedway racing star, Rick Woods, as an
expected starter for the program, but
the sterling performances of point
leader, Rick Goade and Mark Revels
more than made up for the absence of
the former national champion.
Goade chalked up two major wins. In
the 250 TT feature it was a race
highlighted by a three rider duel
involving Goade, Dale Hopkins (Bul),
and Chris Smith (Man). Bultaco
mounted Goade was hard pressed from
the start.
In 250 F.T. Main Event action, it was
Goade all the way showing the tail end
of his mount to Smith and Bill Cain,
sponsored by San Diego Cycle Supply.
One
of
the
hottest
winning
combinations to hit the Trojan oval in
months has to be Mark Revels flying the
red and white of his brand new
Carabela. Revels looked good in winning
over Bob Sanders and his Kawasaki in
three Main Events. Modestly he stated
after the program, "It has to be an upset
to win over a tough rival like Bob," but
he also praised his new Carabela mounts
responsible for one of Revels' biggest
nights at South Gate.
_
Revels' wins came in the 125 TT
Main with Sanders recovering from an
earlier spill while leading taking second
over Tom Doty (Han). In the 100 F.T.
Main, it was Revels once again showing
both Sanders and Doty the shortest way
around. The 125 F .T. Main featured
two separate duels. Revels made it three
wins over Sanders while Daly outlasted
Junior rider, Jim Miller (Yam) for third.
Sanders, Revels, and Doty were
outstanding in the 100 TT Main with all
riders taking a few lessons how to
handle the notorious second jump and
come out of the corner into the
backstretch. In this one, Sanders was
the master showing his form that has
already clinched, four championships
this season.
Junior riders Miller, Rick Anderson,
Mike Bumgarner, Dan Hopkins, .Rick
White and Bob Brooks will bear
watching next season by virtue of their
most recent performances while under
pressure of Senior riders. All have
shown tremendous potential despite
obvious weaknesses time will improve.
The Trojan rac,ing strip, dried by the
gusty winds, developed into one
miserable affair for Sanders, who set a
new record for himself by spilling in
three consecutive heat events. Quickly
to take advantage was Doty, who won
all three heats, and Revels the fourth.
Trojan fans, after experiencing one of
the coldest nights of competition,
would sure welcome a wind-breaker
behind the stands, sometlUng that the
management should look into. Ln most
cases, sponsor is a cinch to pick-up the
advertising space for a small fee to the
track.
