Chambers got off the only run of the day and it was a disappointing 11.13 at 140.18. In the gas, modified and street classes it was a different story. Top runs of the day went to A_R. Richards on the Training Wheels 86-inch Harley at 10.31 and 131.06 for a new bike. The Action F ours team entered a single-engine Honda to experiment, which could go into the "2x4". The TMT racing team also brought some single-engined Honda 4's. Ralph "the Wildman" Muldoon out early in action, leaving Ron Teson to carry the "Blue Goose" Honda 4 to victory over Greg Sawyer (Honda).· Murray said he will try to make it to Lion's next Saturday if he can get the bike together. Many other fuel bikes will be calling Lions "home" to prepare for the coming national. And finally we come to a graduation announcement for little "Bakersfield Mi1Iie" Gorman. Mi1Iie normally rides a fast 125 Kawasaki. However, Millie convinced her husband Tom to let her ride his 11.07-and-llO-mph 500 Mach III. Women's Lib strikes into the realm of motorcycle drag racing. - 110 E, Santa Anita Ave. Burbank, Ca. 91502 17622 CHATSWORTH ST .. 368-1615 GRANADA HILLS By Keith Arnold WILMINGTON, CAL., Oct. 30, 1971 "I couldn 'f get it off in time". That was all the comment Joe Smith could muster. Smith was out there at Lion's Drag Strip with several other leading dragbike personalities to try the strip before the still-distant national. Smith was also "out" in that he only got one-third down the strip on his first r\ln when his bike looped over backwards. The West Covina Champion suffered a possible multiple fracture of one of his hands. Smith has been the sUDject of many rumors concerning his alleged "slipper clu tch". According to world record holder Boris Murray, the clutch is not a "slip" type. It has a standard drag strip-type, meaning very beefed-up but operated in the usual manner. Joe simply feethers the clutch to minimize wheel spin and get down the ET. Other outstanding persons to come to the Wilmington track included Leo Payne and Boris Murrary, who co-piloting an 86-inch fuel sportster, Bill Chambers with a 96-inch fuel Harley, and the B-gas 86-inch Sporuter from Soul Cycle with A_R. Richards on board. All these plus a nonnal cast with Actions Foun, Tedder-Muldoon-Teson, and the everilresent Tom and ... Schutz, a Maico factory rider, won both the 250 and Open Senior classes, edging out Ron DeSoto in the 250 class, but far ahead of AJS factory rider Vic Eastwood, second place winner in the Open class. The 125 Senior class was won by Bill Payne on a Penton. There were some spectacular accidents during the day, including a huge pileup right after the first turn of moto one of the 250 Junior Division 'A' race. Of the 38 bikes in the race, less than ten mad~ it through the mess unscathed. There were no serious injuries, and the race was restarted. The steep off-camber downhill across from the finish line (nicknamed the anthill) took its toll with crashes during every race but no apparent serious injuries. Rick Marsh <:ame flying down the hill in the first moto of the 500 Junior B class and went straight instead of making the turn. He flew through the crowd and through a section of snow' fence before coming to a halt. Marsh walked away from the accident which seemed to be caused by his throttle sticking open. Larry Watkins sustained a broken toe when he shick his foot out in a turn, into the spokes of another bike. Because of the large number of riders entered, Junior results were not yet figured at press time.
