i Sexton Doubles; Hockie Rallies in tloffee Benefit ~ w Z w oJ U > U By Ed Drechsler Photos by Ed Drechsler, Tom Culp, and AI Duke ELSINORE, CAL., Oct. 31, 1971 Scott Hoffee was seriously hurt at an Indian Dunes MX some time ago. His injuries were serious enough to require intensive car for better rhan a week.. Since rhen, his medical bills have mounted astronomically. So, someone decided to do somerhing about it. The Lightweights M.C., whose prime reason for u:istence is the promotion of IT racing as a sport, held a District 37 IT point run today, wirh all the proceeds going to Scott, member of the old Lightweights M.C. Despite super good weather and publicity, the turnout was less than desired. The 125, 250 and 500 Novices all ran motos. There were only 104 lightweight and ultralight sign-ups. The heavyweights totaled somewhere around 60. But, whenever the turnout is ligh t, there is super good racing. Danny Hodde slept through practice in a friend's van. Jim Connolly spent most of the morning setting up his -Bultaco, which hadn't been touched since Adelanto. He did managed to find time enough to install a new bottom end and piston in his Greeves. Jeff Sexton volunteered to be a flagman and ended up as ultralight starter. Bob Hill did a spectacular high side at the jump during practice, which retired him for the rest of the day. Pam Bales, riding for Omo and Son out of Ventura, blew the rotor/flywheel out of her Carabela while leading the Powder Puffers. As the rotor went, so went the rest of the case. Bits and pieces were flying all about. Starter Sexton ducked and the piece headed for him struck a bystander in the stomach. Race of the day has to go to the 250 Experts and their Main Event. The flag dropped with Bob Hosford, Scott Smith and Mike Myers leading Danny Hackie wh a was in six th place due to a bad start. Bob continued to lead Scott and Mike for aboUct three laps, when somewhere in the vicinity of the back sweeper Bob sank back to third place. Meanwhile, Danny had zapped his way to fourth. Mike got around Scott and Danny charged into third, and evenutally to • Casually astride his checks things out.· Earn a eHanee to win a Suzuki 400 from Valerian's. [And we do mean earn!)
