By Tod Rafferty Photos hy Ken Dunlap Cycle News East '" missed this picture, so here it is in fewer than 1000 words. You (the camera) are at the apex of a hairpin turn. Before the tum, on the outside, is a short row of sizeable stutter bumps. Lindstrom, coming toward you, finds his brake pedal jammed and hits the bumps fast. The front wheel is wrenched hard, followed immediately by the rear end slamming up_rd. Gunnar is several feet above the bike, trying to steer with one hand. Each time gravity brings him back down, the seat rushes up to kick him higher. On perhaps the ·fourth violent kick, Bonc and Buster parted company, and Gunnar came down on his arm. The Husky, still bucking, continued for another ten feet and came to rest just short of the spectators. Had Lindstrom not held on as long as he did, there would have been several injuries. It seemed to happen in slow motion; the Husky's kicks sending the rider higher each time. Pillase accept this description in lieu of a photograph. Every picture tells a story, don't it? T.R." DELTA, 0., Oct. 24, 1971 - The· Trans·AMA series has been much rained upon lately, but at Delta the two preceding days of rain were an asset rather than a handicap. Delta is a.sort of ScramblesfMotocross{rf layout, mostly narrow, and dusty when dry. To California riders it looked like home, and they were not encouraged. The rain made the course more tractable, and probably safer. Although Delta features no hill of any consequence, and no spectacular jumps, it's not an easy track. With a few off camber humps, short, bumpy straightaways, and many tight turns, it can become very tiring. In the first heat Tom Rapp (Bul) and Tim Hart (Mai) took the early lead and moved away from the field. Hart soon retired with mechanical problems and Doug Grant (AJS) moved into second place. Rapp wasn't about to be caught and h.e finished first. Gran t took second and Rob Norgaard (CZ) was fourth. Glen Vincent (Hus) grabbed the l,ead in the second heat, with Mike Cram (Mai) , Gary Chaplin (mai) and Dick Burleson (Hus) hard after him. Cram took over first place on the fifth lap, and Chaplin and Burleson moved into second and third. Burleson soon got around Chaplin but was unable to catch Cram. At the end it was Cram first, then Burleson, Chaplin Vincent and DeWayneJones. Hart had repaired the rear end of his Maico and came out to completely dominate the consolation heat. Nobody else was ever within striking distance. Chaplin got a super start in the 250 final and established a 20·yard lead over Rapp, followed closely by Hart. Hart soon moved past Rapp, but couldn't seem to close on rapid Chaplin. earing the half-way point Chaplin began to tire and Hart caught and passed him. Rapp
