You'lI always see it FI RST in Cycle News'" A MEDICAL NOTE We arrived at Saddleback at 8:30 a.m. Mitch and Don rode for three hours. Mitch (my son) and Don Peterson (friend) were out on the trails and at 12:15 p.m., Don crashed down a hill and feU. Don received a compound fracture of his right leg, and various abrasions, including a "purple eye". (Thank the good Lord for helmets). Mitch realized the seriousness of the injury and "screwed" his DKW to the limit back to Saddleback Park's first aid station, and alerted all in charge. Immediately, the dune buggy manned by Huntington Ambulance with litter foUowed Mitch to the accident and placed Don upon litter - walked 'A mile to the dune buggy - transferred him to Saddleback Park first aid station - put him in ambulance and was out of the park within 20 minutes from "crash" and on the way to the hospital. Don was then transported by Southland Ambulance to Glendale Adventist Hospital - his leg was set - other wounds treated, and he is very comfortable, near home (La Crescenta). I commend Mitch for his immediate response to this emergency, Saddleback Park for its completely staffed first aid station, Huntington Ambulance crew for coolness and command of a very serious situation, Chapman General Hospital and staff for their undivided attention, numerous out of town calls and finally arranging a room (No. 421) for Don at the Glendale Adventist Hospital, Sou thland Ambulance for transporting him 50 miles to Glendale Adven tist Emergency. Also, I thank the feUows who stayed with Don at the "scene" until help arrived, Saddleback Park staff for retrieving "broken motorcycle" and their total concern! I realize this situation is not unique; however, the moral to this incident comes down to the foUowing facts: 1. DON'T ride any distance alone! 2. DO ride a facility comparable to Saddleback Park (completely organized and equipped with fully staffed fIrst aid station, dune buggy with litter, and ambulance service). 3. ALWAYS be sure to obtain a medical "note" of authorization (if you take a minor tother than your own son or daugh ter) similar to below: DATE---------I HEREBY AUTHORIZE ANY AND ALL MEDICAL TREATMENT FOR MY (son &/or daughter's name) IN THE EVENT OF ACCIDENT OR ILLNESS WHILE IN THE CARE OF (name of adult) WHOM I AUTHORIZE TO MAKE ANY DECISIONS PERTINENT TO SUCH MEDICAL CARE. (Parent or Guardian Signature) The above "medical au thorization note" made it possible for Don and his family's comfort and it enabled me to act and make decisions that would have been chaotic without it. Again, 1 thank Saddleback Park and staff, Huntington Ambulance Service, Chapman General Hospital in Orange, California, Southland Ambulance Service, persons who stayed with Don before aid arrived, Glendale Adventist Hospital, and the helmet that saved Don's life! TOM ALLREAD La Crescenta, Calif. TOUCHE ROBERT In regard to Mr. Bailey's claiming of Mr. Cooper's class He" Ontario winner. Shades of the early Juties. Only time I saw this happen was at the Richmond, Va. V, Mile in the middle [;fties, when a feUow Ohio rider (whose name escapes me) claimed George Roeder's KR for the tidy pre·inflation price of $1,000. Lonesome George and associates were dismayed and it was only shortly thereafter that the claiming price was upped to $1500 and consequently to its, present $2500. I must admit that I thoroughly enjoy watching all of this exotic equipment run here of late, but under a Class "C" guise it borders on the ridiculous. Congratulations, Bob you gotta winna..... ' EARL E. ROLOFF Spring Valley, Calif. HALT ADVERTISING? In reading your ads promoting various racing even ts or pleasuTe riding hosted by organizations which perhaps are not sanctioned by the AMA, I can fInd no mention of silencers being required except at Muntz Park and Deadman's Point. I observed many leaving who also despised the poor organization and the police officials who seem to think too much enjoyment is a crime. These type of organizers belong with a few of the legislators who don't want to see people's fun get too out of hand. Let's let them know we can handle it and keep the good old days. MARC KRATZER Claremon t, Calif. HIGH COST OF RIDING Speaking for myself and a large group of friends who have been racing at Indian Dunes on a regular basis for the past year, I wish to comment on the management's increasing inability to deliver what they promise. Reprinting in whole or in part only by permission of the publishers. Advertising rates and circulation information will be sent upon request. See S.R.D.S. . intent. We would also like to suggest to our fellow enthusiasts that they might weU consider the ethics of a person like Bob Bailey before entering into any sort of business arrangements with him or his associates. MR. & MRS. WILLIAM JONES San Bernardino, Calif. If Bailey's action was a "distasteful misuse of the rule's intent", then what does the rule intend? We believe that if the AMA removes this rule from the books, it will end the privateer's hopes and chances at every competition and beating the sponsored riders... Ed. 6 PRAISES We noticed in this week's Cycle News a drawing by Karl Erickson. His drawing should help the "Less Sound, More Ground" movement. The theme was right to what you've been saying lately and the far out drawing was very appropriate. We would like to see and hear more from your talented artist! TIM GILLIGAN RICK GILLIGAN MARK HENSCHKE GENE LoGUERCIO DEBBIE SALMON "End Does" PAUL DUQUET OUT OF WHAT?, VOICES OF THE WEST tak i ng advertising until these organizations required silencers I believe very shortly the ads in question would state as do District 37 ads: mufflers dr silencers reg uired. This type of effort needs everyone's support and if we all pull together we can still win. BYRON McLAUGHLIN Dirt Diggers MC We are glad to see your support for silencers tlnd mufflers, but we must respect the right of promoters who do not wish to comply. We believe that sooner or later promoters will come to realize that they are cutting their own throats if they fail to require the silencing devices. For this publication to refuse advertising from these promoters would be an act of force which is against our principles. We can only attempt to persuade through words. And this we will continue to do. but not by forcing people into submission by unscrupulous tactics... Ed. CANTEEN RETURN The two guys on the hack on the fIrst loop of the Golden Bear Enduro were so ·nice to give me a canteen of water. I would like to return their can teen, as they were gone when I returned to camp. Drop me a post card with your address or contact the Bishop M.C. at the F 00 th iII Hawks Enduro, Nov. 7 if you plan to be there. DAVID M. HOLMES 207 CX 65 Wildrose Ln. Bishop, Calif. 93514 While you're at it, Dave, why don't you fill it with some of that good Mammoth Mountain water. too ... Ed. GOOD OLD DAYS I would like to ex tend my feelings of sickness and general upset to the organizers of the motocross held at the Ontario Motor Speedway on October 16. Who are the asses that thought they would take a little bit of our European heritage and turn it into an ugly mess? I hope the old days when motocross was a satisfying break from the usual weekly hassle isn't fading away; the days when people got together to have a good time spectating, racing, and enjoying themselves. Are the money hungry clods who don't give a damn about cycling going to blow it, after all the progress this unique sport has made in our country? It appeared to be an attempt to make motocross another !}J I .~JJj (;V.JJ ~Jt,~• . 11 f h .... " JLJ1~tlf advertisements promised two twenty minute motos. However, the past two times I have attended the motos have been cu t to accommodate th e large number of entries. The result was an average moto of four laps each totaling less than 10 minutes. With the recent increase in entry rates from $5 to $8, I fIgure it to be approximately $I per lap. This appears to be the biggest gyp in motocross, and I hope you will forewarn your readers. BILL CAPPEL Calabasas, Calif. STUCK WITHOUT A STICKlE? Please rush me some C-N stickies, 2 Ig. and 2 smaU so I can be like the other guys who are in the big time. I plan to ride my new CZ in the Support class at Delta Trans-AMA Oct. 24, 1971 and want a shot at the contingency offering from C-N. If I get lucky maybe you can pay for part of my gas and expenses 5$. I've read C-N for over half my life, it seems like! The whole family likes it, after I finish reading it, my son uses it for a coloring book, then my wife puts it under the kitty litter, then the cat weU, anyway for 30 cents how can I go wrong. Thank you C·N. MIKE (The Bike) PATTON Conneaut Lake, Pa. HUH? As American motorcycle enthusiasts my wife and I would like to offer our congratulations to John Coope and BSA for their win at Ontario on October 17th. We would also like to extend our sincere apologies for the claiming incident. BILL A. ZAREMBA, 23A Corona, Cali f. SUBTLE REPLY Bear the standard? Go soak your head, 42 I. The letter wasn't addressed to you or any individual. And it was from a very nice gal named "Martee", not spelled "Marty"! JOAN ROBINSON Lancaster, Calif. IT WASN'T US Rough Rider Cycle Park in Simi Valley has suffered extensively from bad publicity concerning the Tri-Am Race held there on August 29th. As it is totally unfair and damaging to this very desirable facility, the tru th must be told in management's defense. The park was leased for a certain sum (True - but we decided not to include this) by a private promoter for the Tri-Am race. All details prior to the race, at the track ...prizes... advertising was contracted for by the private party leasing Kough Rider, and at no time had any 01 the personnel or management of Rough Rider Cycle Park been involved. We hope this honest statement of lact will reach all those individuals who have been laboring under a false impression concerning this matter, and stand to correct the unfavorable comments that have been made. CHARLES BROOKS, Mgr. Rough Rider Cycle Park YAMMIES BACK We have recovered our Yamaha 360' MX lost at the Desert Turtles Hare & Hound on October 10, 1971. Many, many thanks to the District 37 clubs, desert racers and motorcycle shops who expressed their concern and helped by posting notices. HARRY & LARRY CONNER Granada Hills, Calif.
