- CROSSIN' UP IN KANSAS By Ceorge Hurlburt WICHITA, KAN., Oct. 17, 1971 Motocross racing was featured for the first time at Wichita International Raceway today and riders were getting their practice laps in with the ligh t drizzle which prevailed all morning. The course layout consists of sand in various shapes, forms, bills, mounds and dugouts with dust being kept down to respectable levels because of the mornjng mists. Action first got under way with a 10 minute moto for the 125 Junior and as luck would have it on our first heat, the riders were black flagged due to a very bad start. In lhe 125 Junior, Bob Olloway and Larry Kaufman were mixing il up real good on the turns and straights with Kaufman taking the first heat; but having trouble thereafter for -MI TILT~~ ...../J1l.'!" Cary Meyers, just back from riding a few of the Trans-AMA races, swept all three motos on his Rink-a-Dink-sponsoreli 400. Mjke Lee took second rjding for Crossland Cycle in Boulder, and Bjll Putnam came in for third. Bruce Sass swept the 125 A class on his super-fast Yamaha. The 125 and 250 A's were run together, and Bruce caught many of the bigger bikes in the process of winning his own class. Forty-eight 250 B riders started, and Pdul Bralzler look top honor.;, with Tim Carter in second. Olher J uruor winners were Tom Branson in the 125 class and Clem Cykowski (Hus) in the 500 B. This race was filmed by a professjonal crew, and the Boulder Ridgerunners who put on the race hope to have it made into a 20 minute short to be shown at local theaters. The club also provided free beer at the trophy presen lOlion afterwards, and they had extra cash for lhe A riders. They really worked hard - congratulatjons on a fine race. The 125 Senior Moto featured some of the hardest and most competitive riding which the fan and rider alike will find anywhere. First, Robert Andrew was out in front past the first funnel turn, over the sand dune and leadjng by a good margin, followed closely by Marvin Whitham, Mike LeValley, Cary Witt and James Tiessen. And then after a couple of laps, it happened. Andrew went down, letting the other rider.; by. At the finish of the frrst heat, it's Witt, LeValley and Whitham. The second heat was a battle royal between LeValley and Witt. With the crowd on its feel for lhe whole moto, the pair rode for all their worth. LeValley was in the lead and Witt was trying his utmost to pass but Mike held him off for the whole 6,000 foot cour.;e. At this point, it's Witt and LeValley tied. The third heat came all too soon. Witt got out in front at the funnel tum and there he stayed with LeValley falling back. Witt was followed by Withhem, LeValley and James D. Tiessen. The 250 Senior and J unjor riders were combined with the Seniors leaving first and the Junior riders starting one minute behind. Riding was very keen with_ no' one rider getting so far ahead thal the pack couldn't catch him. In fact, the race between Loy Burnett and Tony Martin was outstanding in the way these two riders were changing positions and leads. After the dust settled, it was Tony Martin winner by only'25 points. Open Senior and Junior were also combined for 15 minutes plus I lap moto. Il was ick Warren and Mack Burnett, mixing it up on the big bikes. Warren took overall. The dirt and sand course at WIR will provide an all weather course for the serious moto rider with the ease in which the sand and dirt is worked. There is plenty of space for everyone, so don't forget Nov. 7, the motocross race here.
