N I ~ w Z W ..J Co) >Co) Jagow Gooses Cross Country By Jerry Shipman GOOSE HOLLOW, ORE., Oct. 3', 1971 - Here at the "Goose" today, Dick Jagow reaUy got it all together by finally beating his' old arch rival Ken Habeck (Hus) with a newly acquired 370 AJS. In the last few years Dick rode a 360 Greeves in both motocross and cross country with a good degree of luck but then came the 400's, so Dick tried a 500 Triumph in the Greeves frame. This hairy beast really shook a few souls when it turned the fastest lap. at the Mint 400 in 1969 but an electrical problem sen t Jagow and Dick Fish back, sadder but wiser. The course itself consisted of newly laid out sections that started on the motocross scratch area, down off the gaint jump then through woods, creeks, hills and open meadows, finally coming home to the pits for the third and tmal checkpoint after IO-five miles laps. On the scratch the Open class took off first following in one minute by the 250's, then the I25's and 100 class. Right off, Habeck ·took th.. lead, followed closely by Carl Pruitt (Hus) trailed by Jagow. Tills lasted until the third lap when Pruitt's Husky fouled a plug letting Jagow by for second. Dick then started working on Habeck, who was really hauling the mail, but Dick was hanging it all out and finally got by on the eighth lap never to be headed again. Mean, while, in the 100 class, Frank Forester (Hod) had already scooped up all the 250, 125, 100 and most aU the Open class and somehow got past Habeck's 400 to take a fantastic second overall, leaving Habeck third. BAD LUCK STRIKES fOLEY AS GENNAI WINSso AT VALLEJOsometimes By James Brammer are many Lanes and VALLEJO, CAL., Oct. 15, 1971 -John Gennai won a seven-troph y final in the 250 Expert class tonight at Vallejo with bad luck striking Jim Foley twice leaving him scoreless for the evening. Twenty-eigh t Expert riders required three qualifying heats and a semifinal to determine the final lineup. Pat McCaul, Jim Foley, and Dennis Robinson won the heats with Mike Renslow, Bill Trumbull, and Rick Hocking 'winning the second transfer positions. Gennai, Larry Drew, Harry Dring, and Pat Lane transferred from the semifinal. On the first lap of the Main, Foley, Robinson and Gennai were battling for the lead when Foley lost a chain. That should not have been disastrous to Foley's point standings for he still had a chance in the 500 class. In the 500 class final, winner Jim Saitone broke into the lead with Hocking in second foUowed by Drew and Foley. Hocking fell with Drew and Foley on top. All riders, went on to finish the race, but pointless. The night's results should place Gennai within one or two points of Foley's lead. In the 650 class, Gennai won over track champion Ken Kelling in second. Rich Raanes was disqualified for noise pollution after finishing Hrst in the 650 Novice final. First was awarded to Howard Sandberg from Dublin after the disqualification. Mike Vestal is going to ·need a new ride when he makes Expert; that's a 200cc Bultaco he finished third with in the 250cc Junior final. Now if I have it straight, Mikey is the younger one, with Mark and Pat being twins - or is Pat the old man? Frank Blato widened the IT scrambles course on the infield at Vallejo and increased the jump leaving more room to pass. The Experts like the passing room and there is room for at least three riders at a time over the jump. Concerning the planned jump off the retainer wall for the motocross course not so. It was discussed, but rejected on the grounds that it would be too dangerous. Riders will run across the track through the pit gates. Motocross is scheduled at Vallejo on Nov. 7.
