Gene Durham recovered from a spill in the first mota to take top Open Expert and then came back to take the 250 Experts. 125 Expert Jimmy Southern swept his class under the brilliant skies. Harley·Davidson-mounted Larry Olguin was top 100 Expert. Photo and report by Richard Barela. Fuller Downs Gerber By Terry and Judy Newfanner Photos by Judy Newfanner JERICHO, UTAH, Sept. 26, 1971 Utah riders got a look at some fall colors and the best cowtrails imaginable, but getting to them wasn't easy, as the Firebirds M.C. of Eureka, Utah, got tough in their 100-mile hare and hound championship. The fast but dusty smokebomh run led directly into an ocean of sand - the kind of sand that is broken up by four-foot ripples and tall sagebrush. A brief road led to a section where the course wound around beneath open dunes; in all, over 20 miles of sand where speed planing was very difficult, which probably accounts for only three finishers in the 100cc class. Plaza Cycle's Don Fuller took home the huge traveling trophy after dicing with desert ace - Preston Gerber for almost the entire distance. The two swapped the lead several times, and the spectators got to see part of the show when Fuller was pulled right out of the saddle by a low-flying Juniper tree, while in a dash for the lead. But well into the third loop, Gerber crashed his Husky without injury, and FulIer moved ahead. Adrian Nebeker was first in to the fmish on his 350 Honda, and he had all the checks, bu t he came in on the wrong trail. Most of the third loop had folIowed an old scrambles course, and Nebeker rode the groove on in, missing a kink that had been added He re-rode the kink and still placed fourth in the Open class. Ken Archibald was an amazing second overall on his 125 Yamaha, on what was anything but a small bike course. He rides for Craigs Cycles. The 125 class is getting extra-hot, as Peter Crandall was running third behind Gerber and FulIer when a rock caught SPROCKETS I1X (Cant'd. from page 26) Loy Burnett took over first for the next two laps then Witt passed him for the first position holding it to the checkered flag. [n the second moto Witt got off on his usual fast start with Dunlap second and Burnett third. Burnett and Dunlap traded positions but Witt just couldn't be caugh L Wilt momen tarily lost frrst in the final mota but charged back to win overall. These Jr. and Sr. Open events were run together and scored separately. In the Sr. Mike Krebs on a Maico found it· clear sailing and breezed through for a win. An invitation is now out to all motocross riders to attend the big. event on Oct. 31 offering a $1000 purse. Also, . a rider's school will be held Oct. 30 by Tony Wynn from Little Rock, Ark., at the master. ~ORSTEN HALL.AN.~ ~J BLENOZALL ••• 'he only lubricant that pours from the con ot a freez· ing -30! The second loop was mostly tight trails through the Juniper trees, and the numerous U-turn tracks testified to how easy it was to get lost for a moment in the unpredictable kinks in the trail. By contrast, loop 3 was mostly an old hare scrambles course run backwards. Frequent use has beat the course into the ultima te cowtrail - still fun to ride after two tiring loops. In the other Classes, Woody Lawhon came back from a period of injury recovery to take third overall and frrst 250 on his Ossa, while Suzuki-mounted Kevin Croft didn't break down; and he thus, almost by definition, won the 200 class. The 100cc crown went to Clay Bundy on his Hodaka, followed by Benton Cheatwood on a muffled Honda. Lamar Walker was towed from the second loop. The day's turnout of 146 was surprisingly low, but it is believed that some riders took the six-hour drive to Boise, Idaho, to watch the European motocross. Tougher than ever before, this year's Firebird's 100 was in the club's tradition of a fun and fair contest. RACING INC.•:~. u.s.
