Cal Rayborn was never more than a few seconds lengths back until the 2 Ist lap, where he fouled a plug. DuHamel's thirsty Kawasaki could not wait 125 miles so a pit stop was mandatory. The Triumph crew wasn't sure if they could go the route, however, so had recommended everyone make a stop just in case. Yvon pitted frrst, giving Nixon an lI-second lead, and that was the race. Gary wasn't stopping for gas no-how. The pit crew held their breath during the last lap. Then Nixon' entered the fmal straight, gave them all a casual wave, and cruised home. Cooper and Kel Carruthers fought closely to a preview of the second heat to eventually take fourth and fifth respectively. Carruthers had a bit of difficulty getting around Mann until Bugs experienced some traction difficulties and fell back to eighth. The first heat was Suzuki's best race of the disappointing season. J ody Nicholas never started due to an injury he received at Ascot two night ago but the other three members, Ron Grant, Art Baumann, and Ron Pierce were at one point well into the top ten. Grant finished fifth, and Baumann, seventh. Gene Romero was exceptionally strong until he fell off near the end of lap 10. One observer explained, "The track was unusually slick in spots and Gene hit one of them." The forks locked sideways as he nit, went through the windscreen and landed on his head in the dirt. The throttle linkage was ruined but he joined the race seven laps later. The crash shatt~red any chance that Romero had of regaining the Grand National Championship since he was listed as 42nd in the frrst heat. With two laps to go Tom Rockwood crashed and on the last lap, at Turn 16, Ralph White passed Dick Mann to take fourth, then unloaded. "He got around me and then got on it," recalled Bugs during the intermission. "He just fell off." White recovered to finish 18th, right behind Rockwood. Kel Carruthers - even before the National began. he showed his detenninetion.
