Many familar faces returned to the Point this weekend hoping for cool weather. It was excellent racing weather, with a nice breeze most of the day, about the same as it's been most of the summer. Almost 250 riders showed and the day became a little longer than usual but everyone enjoyed it. The course was long and fast with several challenging spots. Terry Hogue again took her Penton to the win in the Powder Puff class, with Ossa mounted S. Staten coming in close for second. Two divisions were necessary in the 100 Jr. class with the brass going to D. Walter on his DKW and J. Dial astride a potent little Honda. The 125 Jr. saw a few changes as T. Walters captured one division on his Suzuki but steady Randy Fredricksen again cleaned house in division two aboard his Bultaco. He will probably SGon find himself in the Intermediate class. . The four divisions of 250 Jr. saw plenty of action as M. Keena took his CZ to the first win. S. Bebeck moved to the font of division two on his CZ and he also moved to the Intermediate class. The third division fell to a Suzuki under the control of Brad Bridges, who's usually seen in the 100 class. The fourth division went to T. Holm astride his Ossa. Husky was the bike to ride in the 500 Jr. classes as M. Van Aeusen and L. Gattis captured the wins, both Husky·mounted. The 200 Intermediate class was again captured by R. Boten, on his Yammie, as W. Pollack took his Suzuki to the Senior win. M. Malocco took his first ride in the 125 Intermediate class and walked away with top gold as Bonanza/DKW mounted D. Miller trounced the Seniors. In the 500 Intermediate class, it was Husky and M. Shook capturing the win as Jim Fishback took his CZ to the 500 Senior win. Jim also managed to trounce the 250 Seniors aboard his 1972 production Yamaha MX, as several top contenders encounterered problems. As of Nov. I, silencers will be mandatory at Deadman's. If you're number 2. you naturally try harder, and that is exactly what second ranked Roy Widener (712) is doing while leading T & R Industry champion, Bob Sanders (1), Dan Corbett (91 and an unidentified rider, during Main Event actioh at the South Gate oval. T 'Shoes Sizzle Under Stars roy By Art Loya Pboto by Dennis Greene SOUTH GATE, CAL., Oct. 7, 1971 - It was Joe Brown's lucky night at Trojan Speedway during the TT and flat track racing card: The 23-year·old rider from Bell Gardens, Calif., did not win any races, .but in the final event of the evening at the start of the 250 F.T. Main, he escaped serious injury in a spectacular spill triggered off by Barre Love's charge going into the third corner and involving rider Mike Clarke. According to the calendar, fall is here upon us, but the sizzling performances by the 14-rider fields during Main Event action that somehow resembled the charge of some wild cavalry troopers at . the start, matched the sizzling 100 degree weather of the day. Rick Goade (Bul), Love (Suz), and Craig Steigler (BuI) went at it hot.and·heavy in the 250 TT Main. Slipping, broadsliding, and dueling at high speeds in the short chutes, the trio of riders gave a good account of themselves especially in handling the new twin jumps of Trojan. At the checkered, it was Goade's class figuring high in this triumph over Love, Steigler, Rick Isbell (Oss), and Tim Tipton (Yamt· H<;>wever, it was a different story in the 250 F.T. Main. Love attempting to gain ground fast 'on the first lap, triggered off a two·rider spill and unfortunately disqualified himself from further competition according to track officials, but the sensational riding of Steigler and Isbell, was just too much for Goade to handle as the Fullerton ace settled for third behind the pair. Gary Hardin (Mai) and Clarke (Bul) finished fourth and fifth respectively. In the same event, Junior rider Mike Fox (Mon) was the victor over Junior riders Bill Cervera (Bul), and Dennis Porter (HoD). Bobby Sanders returned to his winning form by taking the 100, 125 TT, 100 and 125 F.T. Main Events and in the process turned back some very respectable challenges. Tom Doty (Hon), Sanders' tormentor in the previous week '5 action, finished second to Sanders in the 100 TT and 125 F.T. Mains. Up·and·coming Keith Cercelius, a Junior rider finished second in the 125 TT Main while Bob Young (Yam), trailed Sanders in the 100 F.T. Main. Sponsored by Richie and 'Sons, the tune·up specialists from Torrance, Calif., Paul Coberly riding a I25cc Yamaha gave his cO/npetition fits in the 250 TT Main finishing second behind Porter in the Junior division. . In a special Main Event for Carabela speedway bikes, Bpb Brooks of Torrance was the big winner over Ron Stewart, Mike Mesojednik, and Roland Klingenstein. Trojan Speedway's other top bike program has now been switched to Friday nights. It's the mini·bikes in an almost carbon copy of the same action of its larger counter·parts.
