(Cont'd. from page 2) N N f ... .... - '" .; N ti o ~ w Z w .... >(,) (,) evening Lloyd alld Pat still had not returned to Los Angeles. We called your station to seek aid and assistance in locating our missing riders. Within three houn from the time of our initial phone call we begah receiving information that our group had been seen earlier in the day. Two other phone calls from your office that same evening dispeUed many worries and prevented us from sending out our own search group on what would have been a wasted trip. Lloyd and Pat arrived in Los Angeles at 4:00 a.m. Tuesday morning in good spirits (but a bit fatigued). The members of Maywood M.C. would like to express our appreciation to your department for the professional, rapid, and thorough manner with which you handled this poten tialJy dangerous situation. You have probably had to handle numerous calls such ~ ours without thanks, but this time we want those involved to get some written applause. By the way, Lloyd also retrieved a red 125cc Sachs motorcycle No..47z and is trying to contact some official from CERA to get the name of the owner. The bike is presently in Los Angeles, safe and sound. PHIL R. COWAN Vice Pres., Maywood M.C. MORE ON THE MONSTER Hurrah for the exposure of "Wild Bill Gelbke" and his wondrous machine! It could only happen in the U.S. and congratulations to him. Is there a poster to foUow? As much as I admire you for the space you give him one can hardly compare your blurb (accompanying) with that of a "Road and Track" report! You didn't even mention whether it "went" or not!!! You ha.ve certainly started something here I think, more, please. COLIN LESLIE FOX Lomita, Calif. Did you honestly think that we would stop after just whetting your appetite? We have in the works a more complete and intense interview with Wild Bill coming up for the very near future. Since he liyes in the mid·west, our Eastern Edition is doing the report. By the way, it does run, quite well in fact; a little bit more information - the engine is a four cylinder truck engine...but =-------= IJournettman 1 TRAILERS VOICES OF THE WEST that is our own speculation. What the report consisted of was all that we know just by observing the photo; we're looking for more info just as much as you are... Ed. RESPONSIVE LETTER To answer the letter from Adele Salinsky, published in your Sept. 28 issue, Goldsmith Productions, in co-operation with tlJe Olympia Brewing Company, has just completed filming for their picture, "Cycles West Coast", to be released around January 7th. Narrated in person by Rick Goldsmith, it will be a feature.length fUm, covering the color and excitement of the many different aspects of cycling. Features will include trail·riding, desert racing, trials, motocross, speedway, and much more, fUmed on the West Coast from border to border. There is footage of professional riders, who are of course a great part of the sport, and a segment planned with everyone's favorite, Eve! Knievel. But the majority of the picture is concerned with the average rider. whether in competition or "cow.trailing". Filmed at many, many race tracks and off-road areas, "Cycles West Coast" is by, about riders, and for riders, with, hopefully, something for everyone, no matter what particular kind of riding they might be in to. So don't give up, Adele; because the odds are pretty good when you go to see "Cycles West Coast", if you are a bike rider, you'l be in the movies! Exact dates and locations will be advertised in Cycle News, cycle mags, and at bike shops, so watch for it in Trailer Sales, 'nc. 12400 Benedict AJe. Downey, Ca presents a 90242 fAMIL Y·ENDURO POIER RUN your area, then truck ~n down to see it! Also, on behalf of Goldsmith Productions, I'd very much like to thank the countless people who were very helpful during fJlming, no matter where we were. Riden, spectators, track managers, A.M.A. people, and everyone that made the impossible a lot easier. These are the people that make cycling the great and enjoyable sport that it is. GREG GOLDSMITH Advertising/Promotion Mgr. Goldsmith Productions SAMMY'S DONE--DUNN Since I'm a subscriber to Cycle News (isn't everybody), I read our article on Kerry Kleid in the October 5 issue. It was great. I've got a lot of respect for her going as far as she has in the sport. She must be a darn good rider. I'm not part of the Women's Lib movement and don't want to be. I still think men are the greatest thing since Cracker-Jacks, but at the same time, I'm glad Kerry finally broke the ice on AMA's anti-women laws. At least I hope she has. I know this is what has stopped me from racing as much as I would Iikeand restricting me to certain type of racing. I am going to try if I do receive a license, is with aU the Hot-Shoes we have here in California, it's not easy to ~t someone to sponsor a crazy female (especially the way I ride ??). Oh weU, people say that a woman can talk a man into anything - I have not foU!'d that so true or maybe I'm just not doing something righ t! ! Anyway, the whole reason why I'm· C~ele THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS We of the Sportsman Racing Association would like to thank those individuals of questionable parentage who vandalized our course in the Shadow Mountain area early Sunday morning, Oct. 10. In a few short minutes of tearing down ribbon, obliterating lime, and changing arrows you managed to destroy days of hard work by our crew to say nothing of the joy you gave the riders who worked so hard only to become lost. Even though it was reported that one of you have numbers on your bike, we find it incredible that anyone who has lived the thrill, aches, and hardships of desert racing could stoop to such raunchy behavior. JOHN TAYLOR RON VINCILLITTE Sportsman Racing Assn. WHERE IT'S DUE On the recent Shamrocks 100-mile Hare and Hound results, I was listed as riding a Harley-Davidson trailbike. I think the Harley is a good bike, but the facts are: I was riding my stock Hodaka 100B model out of Eric Jensen's shop, Yamaha of Eagle Rock. I believe the bike and shop that contribute to my riding should receive the credit. Oh yeah, the Shamrocks laid out a rough and long one, but it was well-marked and manned. WES ANDERSON SR. Soeeer Polo THE WORLD'S MOST EXCITING SPECTATOR SPORT NOW! - FOR THE FIRST TIME AT ASCOT PARK ?1~S7 'P~1'gE Over $1000 in other prizes donated by writing to you is to thank you for mentioning my name in Kerry's write-up. I was really surprised when 1 saw it. It's not the idea of people seeing the name, it's just that it made me super happy to think that someone back there actually remembered it and thought enough to use it. That's really neat!! I know it had nothing to do with the article, nor was it referring to a racer. But even though you used it in a joking way (as far as it being a man's name), 1 still appreciate you for it.
