M Bower Winner al Saddleback By Eric Raits IRVINE, CAL., October 17, 1971 Penton rider Chuck Bower upset usual 125 Expert dass winner Billy Urban at the Saddleback motocross this Sunday. Bower, a recen t graduate from Intermediate ranks, won two motos to whip second- and third-placers Randy Myers and Jim Beauchamp. Urban rode a borrowed Penton as his Puch had been lost in a mixup between the factory and a shipping concern and could only manage a fourth place with crash. shifting and familiarity problems. The 250 Expert dass was a breeze for Urban however, he won all three motos with only token opposition. Young Morris Malone chased Urban around to keep things in teresting and obtained a second place for his efforts. A New Mexico visitor, Gene Durham from Farmington (near Albuquerque» beat Malone in the last moto but ended up third. Randy Roche had a destruction derby kind of day. He hit B'fent Rhoades in one moto, spilling Rhoades out of second place and then overhsot the finish line at the checkered flag and smacked into Kelvin Frank's pride and joy, his new Toyota pickup. Franks, no doubt, . had a heart stoppage as he watched Roche bounce off the truck and back on the track but damage was minimal as the bike luckily hit only the front wheel. Rhoades had his best day since breaking his collarbone five weeks ago. He placed fourth in the 500 Expert dass behind Dave Smith, the quickly improving Mark Anderson and Greeves rider Rick Brown. Smith, letting his broken kneecap and foot heat as he rode around all day in first place had an easy time and was in good spirits. ''The track is really fme, tacky all the way around from yesterday's rain. I just wish Roberts had been here. He's beaten me twice now and I would have liked to meet him today." (Ron Roberts has won the last two CMC motocross 500 Expert events.) Besides Urban and Smith, several Juniors and Inte'fmediates had sweeps of their three motos. Mike Stephenson won three of the 500 Intermediate dass, T. Breker and Mike West won their respective divisions in the 125 Juniors with the hat track and Gaylon Mosier dominated the 250 Intermediates. T. Power had another good day on his dean BSA in the 500 Jr. dass, Division I, placing second behind Brad Thompson. Power likes Saddleback, having won here two weeks ago. Riders should note the weekly mo tocross at Ascot Park switches to Friday nights this week and the next Sunday meeting will be October 31 at Carlsbad for the CMC. RESULTS 100 JR. N. Petrillo D.
