WRIGHT HEARLY LOSES AT ASCOT MOTOCROSS
By Eric Raits
GARDENA, CAL., Sept. 30, 1971
Blustery winds kicked up clouds of dirt
at Ascot Park tonigbt and competition
stiffened in several Expert classes.
Jeff Wright nearly lost the 125
Expert division for a change, facing a
strong effort from Joe Scotland. Wright
has won just about every race this year
in the small bike division but had to
scramble to stay on top. The La
Crescenta teen won the first moto but
got a poor start in the second and could
only manage a third behind Scotland
and Tom Cook. Tbat finish brought
Wright into the last moto behind
Scotland in a must win situation.
Scotland led but Wright kept pulling
even with him on the outside until he
forced a mistake and snatched the lead..
Wrigb t was the spoiler for a trio of
Ossa riders in the 250 Expert class.
While Danny Hockie and Dave Pessy
traded wins in the fIrst two races,
Wrigh t grabbed a third and fourth. Bob
Messer was tied with Wright for third
place so the last moto had the first four
positions open for grabs.
Dave Pessy look the lead and began
inching away from the pack until he
fell. Wright accepted the lead and went
on to win ahead of Hockie and Messer.
Hockie just motored along in his secure
second place to sew up an overall win.
Tom Guiterrez of San Pedro, Calif., was the
top 125 Intermediate tonight.

Pessy was second and Wright took third.
Bill Payne showed up to win three
, easily, ricling the last moto in a fringed
Daniel Boone coat with leather strips
hanging and waving three feet behind
him. If Payne had gone down in the first
turn the entire pack of 500 Experts
would ahve been knotted up like a hair
ball in an owl's stomach.

opposition to Payne with three steady
rides on his Yamaha. Todd is an
Intermediate and chased Payne for the
second week in a row. Bryan Lendl and
Ken Markham were the closest Experts
to Payne.
