_ '" oY.. .. "' .. ~. VICTORY .... m N t> By the time the last Junior crossed the finish line on his time trials the first Expert heat was lined up and ready to go. Rice jumped into the lead on the first lap, taking the high line around the track. This was one time that you could ride anywhere on the track, it was the same whether you were down low or up high; it was bad everywhere. Rice had no problem picking up the win with Terry Dorsch second and Mark Williams third. These three riders transferred into the ational. The second heat was a three way battle hetween John Weaver, Seale and Bart Markel. Weaver stayed out in front most of the time as Markel would ride high one lap and move in to a close second, then he would ride low for a lap and drop back to fourth. At one time Dick Mann moved into third bu t even tually dropped back to fourth. Weaver held his first place for the final laps and at the checkers Seale finished second and Markel third. o ~ w z W ..J U >- U .~ - -- _.....:':leo:;;:::...;;. •. - The top three finishers, but not in their final positions. Eddie Mulder (20) dropped to second, Gene Romero (1) won and Dave Aldana took third. Heat race competition-Keith Mashburn (191, Sonny Burres (73) and Eddie Mulder (20) lead the chargeout of the turn. The third heat was a tight battle between the Team Mexican Dave Aldana and Gene Romero. Aldana stayed in close to the inside fence and picked up the win with Romero a close second and John Hateley third. As soon as the Expert heats were over, the Juniors were ready to go. Kenny Roberts made short work of the first heat leading lrom start to finish. Carl "Frenchie" LeBlanc won the second and fastest heat. The program was' moving at a r",pid pace as the Experts lined up for the Semi. The second-chance event moved Dave Sehl, Dick Mann 'and Eddie Mulder into the National as they grabbed the first three spots. The AMA, still trying to play double-up and catch·up, moved directly into the Junior-final. LeBlanc had the pole position for the start but had a problem getting his Triumph off the line and was in seventh place going into th.e first tum. Roberts shot off the line and in to the lead and began stretching it out. David Rupe, Robert Ely, and Mike Collins swapped second, third, and fourth places for the 10 laps. By the ninth lap Rupe had moved into second place but was too far behind Roberts to catch up. Roberts won with Rupe second, Ely third and Collins fourth. By the end of the Junior final the weather began to look a little better for the National. Mulder jumped into the lead with Seale second, Romero third, Aldana fourth and Rice fifth. A few laps later Mulder was still in first while Romero moved into second and Seale dropped to third; Rice and Aldana were running fourth and fifth. At the half way point, Mulder was still holding first place but Romero was closing the gap. Aldana had moved into third with Rice riding the high outside trail in fourth. With five laps to go, Romero moved up on Mulder and took over the lead. Just a few bike lengths behind Mulder was Aldana.
