Cranke 'Flawless' at Expo r"" SACRAMENTO, CAL., Sept. 19,1971 - Carl Cranke rode two flawless motos to take the win hands down in the Open Expert class. Carl was .pressed in the early stages of the races by another Husky rider, J.im Dieu. But as the races went on the roughness and the condition of the track took its toll. The races this week were of poor quality. With much confusion and not enough help they got off late and ol)1y a two-moto program was run. The track left a bit to be desired, being very hard and ~usty. Two people that should be mentioned that did more than their fair share are Mrs. Bruce Young and Miss Pollie Riley. These two were hired to do only the lap checking but as it ended up they handled all the sign 'ups, lap checking, and scoring all by themselves. Racing needs more people like them. The Am/Ex. 125 'Ciass was one of the best of the day with Charlie Marshall and Kevin Henry pressing each other all day long. Finally at the end of each Washington Whiz Wails By Jerry Shipman GOOSE HOLLOW, ORE., Sept. 19, 1971 Rick Poulin, Selah, Washington's own wonder boy, really, got it on here today, riding two classes. The 17-year-old scooted in the Open Expert class by taking all three motos by a large margin after finally getting by a potent dinosaur in the form of Richard Giboney's 500 Matchless/Metisse. Dick's Metisse really sounded neat with its deep throaty rump-rump among the sharp crackling two-yankers. However, its different handling made for a pogo effect letting Poulin and Bill Cook by for first and second overall. In the 125 Expert class young Poulin had a considerably tougher time. Riding a borrowed DKW he really tried his best to get 'around Ken Buirley's new prototype Penton. The new Penton easily pulled away (reported 26 h.p.) for the overall win. Rick however, did win the second moto when 'Ken got down once in a many-bike mixup but he got back up to finish a close second to Rick. Pat .Smithson rode his usual grand style in the Open Nov. Div. II race by taking the wins with very little competition. Pat did not get too good of starts but he, the real charger that he is, took over early in the race to take the overall win in the cl""s. The Open Am. event was a very close race. Richard Bungay rode his CZ to the win, hands down. Running second in close competition during the races was Bill Onga of Gene's Automotive in Loomis. Bill had second in the bag until he got it on a little too much just afte,r the finish line and went down. By the time he got back into the action he had lost the valuable positions that he needed, which left him with fourth overall. (Results on page 32) ~"" <-~. .... Young SACRAMENTO, CAL., Sept. 24, 1971 - Gus Lauer was given his high point trophy for the year of speedway racing at Cal Expo tonigh t. There were presentations given to two other persons that have kept scores of all the races .all year long and-have kept all the paperwork in perfect shape. They are Mrs. Lauer and Mrs. Eckels.
