By Buzz Baty EL TORO, CAL., Sept. 29, 1971 Tonight was Dave Aldana's last ride at El Toro for awhile and it may be the right time for the local talent has really been making him work for his wins. Mike Myers riding his 250 Yamaha for K& N had victory in sigh t but made a little mistake and Aldana was past him for the win. The little mistake was simply moving out of tum two about three feet too high, and zap!, Aldana's under and gone. When you think a moment, that is the difference between a winner and a pro, like David Aldana, and the still up-and-eomer. Many folks wonder where a youngster first gets the bug. EI Toro had a long repu tation as a breeding ground for fu ture stars. Most prominent for now, of course, is David Aldana. Others are, Dave Smith, National No. 15, Keith Mashburn, and one of the nation's leading Juniors, Gary Scott. Young Randy Monroe may be another in the distant future. He rides with style and determination for one so young. On this age business, when his father was asked how old Randy is, he replied, "My God, that kid is almost 14 years old". Young Monroe, riding his 100cc Kawasaki, charged to the front off the line, and was holding a strong first through the first two corners extending his lead. [n the third corner he was way out front, but this was a IT and Randy was on the short track course., -Riding hard he came back to finish sixth in a field of 11, good show! Wes Cooley, majordomo of ACA, has announced that the post entry penalty has been discontinued for the rest of the year. All entries for the Wed. night El Toro event are $5 across the board. Winner in MA YNARD EYES SKYWARD By Buzz Baty EL TORO, CAL., Sept. 24, 1971 - Bob Maynard was observed Friday night walking around talking to himself, with eyes cast heaven '5 direction, askingsomeone for help. With· a rough count of 225 entrants for El Toro's Friday nigh t motocross Bob was in need of help to stage three motos for each class. The the man was equal to his task, and the races went off with nary a hitch. Most of the riders who have been running in the first three Friday nights events were present and did their thing, as well as some new additions to the scene' to perk up the competition. Bruce McDougal did a fine job in the 250cc Expert division with two second places, and one win for the overall, to AJ5-mounted Morris Malone's first, second and a third to garner the second spot. Malone rode the 500 Expert class on his bored-out 250 Ajay for another overall second place; the win went to hard-riding Greg Smith on his 400 Mako. (Results on page 32) . ~- ~~- - 'f(~.·' One of the top Team RICKMAN riders, Bruce Baron concentrates on the sport of Motocross. A consistent winner in both 125 and 250cc classes in the Senior and Expert divisions, Bruce often races both classes the same day, chalking first places in each event. That kind of dependability takes stamina and skill-and something more. Ask Bruce.
