weeks for the collarbone to heal but
couldn't stay away from motocross that
long. He looked around the pits, smiled
and said, "Just being out here is
enough."
,
Married and the father of two sons,
Rhoades is a transplanted car racer. He
gave up the cars when he opened his
new shop. "There wasn't enough time
to run the shop and prepare the car also.
The bike just takes four hours or so to
get ready while the car took four hours
every day of the week."
Rhoades saw his first motocross two
years ago and decided the sport was for·
him. He moved up to Expert in April of
this year, riding week after week.
He had no thought of contending the

weeks ago.
The gutty Rhoades returned to the
s.cene of the misfortune to ride one lap
and earn the meager last place points.
He didn't stop after riding one lap but
picked the smoothest way around the
rutted course for a total of four laps. "It
was so much fun I couldn't stop," the
31-year-old speed shop owner from San
Bernardin 0 said.

when the mid-year standings showed
him in third. He resolved to ride hard
and attempt to maintain his third
position. His consistent high placings
put him in the number one spot before

Rhoades was quick to give credit to
his chief competitor at this time, Bill
Urban. "Urban's sure great isn't he?
He'd be way ahead by now if he hadn't
taken that two week vacation to
Canada.'"
The Husqvarna rider is ten years older
than most of his fellow racers but shrugs
off the difference. "I don't think you
can get too old for motorcorss. I can't
quit anyway, I love it too much. It's not
a matter of taking it or leaving it at all."
He gets a lot out of racin . "It's good
for you physica1!y and it keeps you
sharp mentally," he says.
Rhoades has come a long way since
the day two years ago when a dismal
Sunday at the beach sent him looking
for something else to do. He decided to
watch .. motocross instead, gained a new
interest and mo tocross acquired a tough
competitor.
Back at the motocross track, the
other protagonist in the number one
place drama picked up valuable points.
Bill Urban swept both divisions he
entered. He won three races in both the
125 and 250 Expert classes.
Dave Smith had no trouble winning
all three in the 500 Expert class for his
second win in two weeks since his
Saddleback·versus-kneecap incident.
